Dobbs tallied a career-high 25 points and became the
16th player in program history to register 1,000 points for her
career but it was not enough as the American University women's
basketball team was edged 64-61 by Mount St. Mary's on Monday
night.
Dobbs went 10-for-14 from the floor and
5-for-8 from beyond the arc, but she was the lone player in
double-figures for the Eagles. Jen Dumiak
and Arron
Zimmerman registered seven boards apiece as American
held a 42-24 advantage in rebounds, posting a season-high 19
offensive boards. Dumiak also dished out a team-high six
assists.
"They played great and shot the ball
really well for the game…but I also think that's us just
playing poor defense," said Head Coach Megan Gebbia. "I felt like we were a
step slow to everything today and that hurts when you're playing
against a team that can shoot the three and penetrate."
The two teams traded scores early before
American (6-3) notched seven straight points for an 18-12 lead at
the 9:43 mark. Sydney Henderson, Dobbs and Jessie Kaufman traded
treys but back-to-back buckets by Jordan
Light and Dobbs put the Eagles up 25-18 with 5:02
remaining in the first half. Jacqueline Brewer hit another triple
for the Mount and completed a three-point play to give Mount St.
Mary's the 29-28 edge with 1:04 left to go. Lauren
Crisler hit a jumper on the dish from Dumiak but
Henderson drained a three at the buzzer to send the Mount into the
half up 32-30.
Mount St. Mary's (4-6) outshot American
52.2 to 38.2 percent from the floor and went 6-for-10 from
three-point range while the Eagles were just 4-of-10 from beyond
the arc in the first half.
The Mount extended its lead with a drive
by Rachel Mathews out of the break but American retook a 36-34
advantage on a triple by Zimmerman and free throw by Dumiak at the
17:30 mark. A three-pointer by Henderson knotted it up for the
sixth time in the game at 48-all with 10:56 remaining and Mount St.
Mary's took a 53-50 lead on a lay-up by Ashley Christie and a
three-point play by Brewer. Dobbs notched her 1,000th career point
on a triple to tie it up and sparked a 7-0 run for the Eagles as it
took a 57-53 lead with 4:03 to go.
Henderson hit her fifth three with 2:53
to play to put the Mount up 60-59 but Dobbs gave American back the
advantage with a bucket. A pair of free throws from Jody Chickey
gave Mount St. Mary's the one-point edge 40 seconds later and
Henderson hit a pull-up jumper with 52 seconds to play for the
64-61 lead. Light tried a trey to tie it up but her shot was off
the mark and American was unable to get a shot off in the final
seconds as the Mount walked away with the 64-61 victory.
The Eagles shot 40.3 percent from the
field and went 8-of-18 from three-point range. Mount St. Mary's
completed the game shooting 51.1 percent from the floor and were
9-of-17 from beyond the arc.
Henderson finished with a game-high 28
points, going 11-of-17 from the floor and 5-of-7 from three-point
range. Brewer added 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting and Christie led
the team with five rebounds and five assists.
American will look to bounce back when it
heads to Coppin State on Saturday, December 21 at 2 p.m.
