The American University women's basketball team remained
undefeated in Bender Arena to open the year, snapping its two-game
skid with a 77-54 win over Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon.
American (4-2) had four players reach double-figures for the
third time this season. Alexis
Dobbs led the Eagles with 15 points with Jen
Dumiak adding 13 and Sarah
Kiely and Ti'Asia
McGeorge notching 10 apiece. Kiely pulled down eight
boards to lead American as it held a 40-34 edge in rebounds. Dobbs
and McGeorge also led the team with six assists each as Shaquilla
Curtis finished with three steals.
"It was a slow start for us but I think we finally got ourselves
together and were able to carry that momentum into the second
half," said Head Coach Megan Gebbia. "I think we came out a
little bit lax and we needed to pick up the defensive intensity.
Once we started to do that and started to make some easy shots I
think things just kind of flowed for us."
Dartmouth (1-4) got on the board first with back-to-back drives
from Milica Toskovic and Kamala Thompson before Dumiak laid it in
for the Eagles at the 18:09 mark. American found its rhythm early,
going on a 10-2 run capped off by consecutive triples from McGeorge
and Dumiak for the 21-11 advantage with 12:43 remaining in the
game. The Big Green called a timeout and Toskovic hit back-to-back
triples to make it a four-point game with 11:07 to play.
American fought back, regaining its 10-point advantage on a
drive by Kiely off the dish from McGeorge and went up 36-23 on a
three-pointer by Dobbs with 3:40 left in the first half. The Eagles
took a 15-point lead on another bucket by Kiely but Fanni Szabo
answered for Dartmouth with consecutive baskets to cut American's
advantage to 38-27 at the end of the first half.
The Eagles shot 47.1 percent from the field and went 3-for-11
from three-point range in the first. The Big Green shot 37.9
percent from the floor, going 3-for-9 from beyond the arc.
American carried its momentum into the second half, coming out
of the break with a 6-0 run and going up 54-29 on a drive by
Michelle
Holmes. The Eagles held Dartmouth without a score from
the field for nearly seven minutes, with the Big Green finally
breaking through on a lay-up by Abbey Schmitt at the 13:08
mark.
Curtis completed a three-point play to give American a 26-point
advantage, 63-37, with 9:14 remaining and the Eagles took its
largest lead of the afternoon, 71-44, after consecutive
three-pointers by McGeorge and Lauren
Crisler with 4:30 left. Dartmouth tried to chip away
at American's lead with a pair of treys from Katie Vareika but
Curtis closed out the scoring on a pull-up jumper with 27 seconds
remaining for the 77-54 final score.
The Eagles finished the day shooting 47.1 percent from the floor
and 27.8 percent from beyond the arc. The team posted 44 points in
the paint and held the Big Green to just 18 as Dartmouth shot 36.4
percent from the field and 35.3 percent from three-point range.
American also turned the ball over a season-low four times in the
game, forcing 14 miscues by the Big Green.
Vareika led Dartmouth with 13 points and Szabo added 11.
Thompson had a team-high eight rebounds with five assists.
American will head to Hampton on Wednesday, December 4. Tip-off
is set for 7 p.m.
