Women's Basketball Falls Late at Fordham, 66-62

The American University women's basketball team was edged at Fordham on Monday night, dropping a 66-62 contest for its second straight loss.

Michelle Holmes had a career-best 14 points to lead the Eagles, also adding seven rebounds, while Sarah Kiely posted 10 points with a team-best eight boards. Alexis Dobbs, Jen Dumiak and Ti'Asia McGeorge each posted nine points apiece in the loss. Dobbs and Arron Zimmerman led the team with six assists and Kiely matched her career mark with three blocks. 

Fordham (4-2) took a quick 7-0 lead in the first three minutes before the Eagles got on the board with a drive by Dumiak at the 17:10 mark. Zimmerman and Kiely drained back-to-back triples to battle back within one and a wide-open runner by Dobbs tied it up at 14-all with 11:20 left to go in the first half. American forced a Rams' turnover on the other end and Holmes notched back-to-back points for its first advantage of the game, 18-14, at 9:49.

American (3-2) took a 23-16 lead on a Zimmerman pull-up jumper and triple by McGeorge with 7:11 left to go in the first half. But Fordham answered with a 7-0 run to knot it up at 23 with 4:52 to play and took back the advantage on a deep two by Hannah Missry with 3:34 remaining. Kiely dished it to Dobbs to give the Eagles back the lead, 27-26, with 3:06 to play but the Rams closed out the half with consecutive buckets to go into the break up 30-27. 

Fordham outshot American, 44.4 to 38.7 percent, from the floor with the Eagles holding the advantage from beyond the arc, going 37.5 percent compared to 25.0 percent shooting from three-point range for the Rams. Fordham also held a slight 18-17 edge in rebounds in the first half.

The Rams came out of the intermission on an 11-2 run for its largest lead of the game, 40-29, at the 16:47 mark. After an American timeout McGeorge hit a trey and Dobbs dished it to Holmes inside to make it a six-point game. Dumiak nailed a triple from the right side and was fouled on the play, hitting the free throw for the four-point play to put the Eagles back within five, 49-44, with 9:43 to play.

Dobbs and McGeorge drained consecutive three's to tie it at 52-all with 5:46 to go. Fordham called a timeout but Geleisa George dished it to Holmes, who pulled up to put American on top 54-52 at the five minute mark. The teams traded buckets as the Eagles held onto its 60-59 edge on a Holmes' basket and free throw from George with 1:58 remaining. Erin Rooney completed a three-point play to give the Rams back the lead but George drove baseline and laid it in to knot it up again. Rooney was able to score three straight points for Fordham as it took a 65-62 lead with 20.9 seconds left. Dobbs' last chance shot was off the mark and Samantha Clark was fouled after collecting the rebound with 0.6 seconds on the clock, going 1-of-2 from the line to secure the 66-62 win for the Rams.

American finished the game shooting 43.9 percent from the field, going 8-for-20 from three-point range. The Rams shot 43.4 percent from the floor and went 6-for-16 from beyond the arc. The Eagles held a 34-32 edge in rebounds. 

Rooney led Fordham with 24 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. Missry added 13 and Clark had 10 points.
