The American University women's basketball team rolled to its
second straight win, downing UMass, 82-59, on Sunday afternoon in
Bender Arena.
Four players scored in double-figures for the Eagles for the
second time this season. Arron
Zimmerman led American with a career-high 15 points,
going 5-for-9 from the floor with two triples. Alexis
Dobbs added 14 points, shooting 50 percent from both
the field and three-point range. Jen Dumiak
and Michelle
Holmes added 10 points apiece for the Eagles.
Zimmerman also matched her career mark with a team-high eight
rebounds while Sarah
Kiely pulled down seven. Dobbs tallied six assists and
Dumiak and Zimmerman notched three steals apiece.
American (2-0) went on a 9-0 run to take a 14-4 lead early, with
Dobbs knocking it away and dishing it to Dumiak for the 10-point
advantage. A jumper by Kim Pierre-Louis made it a five-point game
but Kiely drained a trey as the shot clock expired to put the
Eagles up 24-13 with 6:25 to go in the first half. UMass fought
back to make it a four-point game on a triple by Alyx Stiff at the
3:59 mark and again with 3:26 to play on a pair of free throws from
Stiff. Zimmerman and Ti'Asia
McGeorge hit back-to-back triples in the final minute
of the half to send American into the intermission up 34-23.
The Eagles shot 41.9 percent from the floor with five
three-pointers in the first half. The Minutewomen held an 18-13
advantage in rebounds but shot 38.9 percent from the field and went
2-for-7 from three-point range.
The teams traded buckets out of the break before UMass was able
to make it a seven-point game on a drive by Kiara Bomben. A lay-up

Curtis gave American back a 10-point lead, 49-39, at
the 12:52 mark and Zimmerman drained a three on the next
possession. American began to find its rhythm with a steal and
lay-up by Curtis and triple by Lauren
Crisler on the dish from Dobbs giving the Eagles a
57-41 lead.
UMass (0-3) chipped away at the advantage, using a 7-0 run to
make it a 10-point game, 60-50, with 7:46 to play. Dumiak prevented
the Minutewomen from cutting the lead to single digits, laying it
in to put American's lead back at 12. The Eagles were able to roll
down the stretch as a three-point play by Zimmerman gave American a
73-55 advantage with 3:29 left in the game. The Eagles held UMass
scoreless from the field for the final three minutes and the
Minutewomen scored the last points of the game on a pair of free
throws from Nola Henry with 17 seconds left for the 82-59 final
score.
American finished the game shooting 44.8 percent from the field
and went 10-of-27 from beyond the arc. The Eagles were also a
perfect 12-for-12 from the foul line in the game and committed one
turnover in the second half, scoring 26 points off turnovers by the
Minutewomen.
Emily Mital led UMass with 17 points and went 5-of-6 from the
floor and 2-of-3 from three-point range. Bomben finished with nine
boards as the Minutewomen held a 35-32 edge in rebounds. UMass shot
39.0 percent from the field and were just 3-of-13 from beyond the
arc.
American will head out on a three-game road trip next as it
looks to remain undefeated to open the year. The Eagles travel to
UMBC on Wednesday, November 20 at 5 p.m.
