Box Score Only two days after a heartbreaking loss at Patriot League-leading Army, the American University men's soccer team was back on Reeves Field Tuesday afternoon, taking on West Virginia. The Eagles played the Mountaineers to a double-overtime tie despite playing without three senior starters.
American (4-6-4) was able to bottle up much of the West Virginia (6-6-3) offense, overcoming seven corner kicks by the Mountaineers in the first half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Dylan Hobert made his first career start, playing in only the second match of his career, recording a shutout with three saves.
"I thought we played well considering we were back in action so soon after a tough, tough game at Army and playing without a few key players," said head coach Todd West.
With Hobert in net and seniors Colin Seigfreid and Cristobal Soto sitting out, it was the younger Eagles who stepped up.
"They begged me to play today, but with them being close to yellow card accumulations, we couldn't risk them missing a Patriot League showdown with Lafayette," stated West. "But guys stepped up today, especially on defense to play well in front of Dylan."
Junior Conor Osborne and Stephen Hauschild stepped up on the back line with sophomore Ed Gonzalez and rookie Chris Fanet taking on a larger role in the midfield.
American turned on the offensive pressure late in the match, finishing with five shots on goal to WVU's three, but neither team could find the go-ahead-goal.
Rookie Joe Iraola nearly sent the Eagles home winners with a shot in the box in double-OT and only three minutes remaining, but the shot went high over the crossbar.
AU will look to take the momentum into a pivotal Patriot League match at Reeves Field this Saturday at 1 p.m., in a rematch of last season's conference title match against Lafayette.
