Box Score
The American University women's basketball team used a second
half run to overcome a first half deficit for the third straight
time to remain undefeated in the Patriot League with a 67-62 win
over Holy Cross.
Four players scored in double-figures for the second consecutive
time and every player who appeared had at least a bucket, rebound
and steal as American (10-7, 3-0) registered its 18th straight win
in conference regular season play. Jen
Dumiak led the effort with 13 points and Sarah
Kiely notched 12 shooting 6-of-7 from the floor.
Geleisa
George added 11, going 9-for-10 from the charity
stripe, and Ti'Asia
McGeorge registered 10 points. Kiely grabbed a
team-best seven boards and Alexis
Dobbs matched her career mark with eight helpers with
a career-high three blocks. Dobbs and Dumiak led the team with
three steals apiece.
"It feels good that we have some resiliency but we can
definitely learn a lot from today's game," said Head Coach Matt Corkery. "I think to get 21
assists in a game and to have those coming from multiple players is
big. And also everyone coming in to rebound it I thought that was a
big part…the 13 offensive rebounds led to some easy points
at the end of the game."
Holy Cross (8-10, 0-3) jumped out to a 13-4 lead early, with
American's only points coming off drives from Dumiak. After an
American timeout, the Eagles posted a 7-0 run to cut its deficit to
13-11 with 11:40 remaining. An Arron
Zimmerman lay-up after a dish from Shaquilla
Curtis tied it at 15 before the Eagles took their
first lead off a triple from McGeorge with 5:38 left. Alex Smith
responded with a three-pointer to put her at 1,000 points for her
career, but Dobbs hit one from the top of the key to keep the
Eagles within one, 29-28. The Crusaders held on to the advantage
heading into the break, with Brisje Malone laying it in at the
buzzer for the 39-36 lead.
Holy Cross outshot American 60.7 to 48.1 percent from the floor
and 50.0 to 33.3 percent from beyond the arc in the first half.
The Crusaders tallied the first five points of the second half
but McGeorge was fouled after draining a three-pointer and made the
free throw to bring the Eagles within one. The play sparked a 13-2
run for American as it took a 51-45 lead with 14:18 to play and
forced Holy Cross to call a timeout. The Crusaders tied it at 55
after a 10-4 run but Kiely laid it in to give the Eagles back the
advantage with 6:32 remaining.
Holy Cross tied it again at 59 on a three-pointer from Smith but
Dumiak laid it on back-to-back possessions to put the Eagles up
63-59 with 2:02 to play. Smith answered with her fourth trey of the
game to put the Crusaders back within one before American closed it
out with consecutive buckets from Dumiak and Kiely for the 67-62
victory.
Smith posted a game-high 18 points shooting 7-of-12 from the
floor while Amy Lepley added 16. Molly Hourigan registered a
game-high eight rebounds.
The Crusaders held a 48.0 to 43.9 advantage in field goal
percentage but the Eagles outshot Holy Cross 35.7 to 33.3 percent
from beyond the arc. American outscored Holy Cross's bench by a
29-7 margin and held a 35-29 advantage in rebounds.
American will look to extend its win streak over conference
opponents and remain undefeated in the conference when it takes on
defending Patriot League Champion Navy on Wednesday, January 23 at
7 p.m. in Annapolis, Md. The game will be broadcast live on
Patriot League All*Access.
