Timmy Mulgrew scored two and a half minutes into the second
overtime period on Saturday afternoon to give George Mason a 2-1
victory over the American University men's soccer team in the D.C.
College Cup title game.
"I'm happy with this team, I think this could be a very good
team and we lost to a very good George Mason team today," said Head
Coach Todd West. "I'm a little upset we
couldn't finish the job but the way we played and the way we
competed gives us a chance to be successful this year."
American (2-2-0) found the back of the net 17 minutes into the
game. Colin Seigfreid crossed it in
as Cristobal Soto added the finish with a
header into the top right corner for the 1-0 lead. The Patriots
were able to respond in the 24th minute, with Julio Arjona slipping
it past Billy
Knutsen on a free kick just outside the penalty
box.
The two teams played evenly in the second half, with George
Mason (3-0-0) outshooting the Eagles by a 7-4 margin. But
American's defense was able to come up with stops to keep the game
tied at one and send it to overtime.
The Patriots led the attack in the first overtime period,
tallying four shots. After a scoreless period, George Mason came
out of the break on the offensive with Mulgrew finding the back of
the net for the game-winning goal.
George Mason outshot the Eagles 18-9 in the game. Knutsen
recorded four saves for American.
Following the game, Chris Kuramoto, Seigfreid and Soto
were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Eagles return to Reeves Field next weekend to host a pair of
games. American first faces St. Francis (N.Y.) on Friday, September
7 at 5 p.m. before taking on Saint Peter's on Sunday, September 9
at 3 p.m.
