Box Score The American University lacrosse team closed out its four-game homestand to open the season with a 16-10 victory over Old Dominion on Saturday. Bernadette Maher recorded a hat trick and nine different players got on the board for the Eagles.
Old Dominion (1-1) scored first but the Eagles went on a 4-0 run to take a 4-1 lead with 15:32 remaining in the first half. The Monarchs answered with a 3-0 run of their own to tie the game at four goals apiece. B. Maher and Emily Stankiewicz each tallied goals to give American a 6-4 lead.
Old Dominion recorded a goal with 3:02 left to play in the first but Lauren Schoenberger and Emily Maher added back-to-back goals for the 8-5 lead at the end of the first half.
Alex Lugovina and E. Maher tallied back-to-back goals to open the half before Old Dominion got on the board with American still holding a 10-6 advantage with 23:25 left to play.
American (3-1) went on a 5-0 run before Old Dominion tallied four straight goals to cut American's lead to 15-10 with 4:14 remaining. Schoenberger added her second goal of the day with 40 seconds remaining to secure a 16-10 victory for the Eagles.
Emily Burton, E. Maher, Schoenberger and Stankiewicz each posted two goals as Burton recorded a team-high four points. Kaska Komosinski recorded seven saves in the win.
Emily Austerberry and Rebecca Reymann led the Monarchs with two goals apiece. The victory is the third straight for American over Old Dominion in as many years.
The Eagles will head out on a three-game road trip, opening Patriot League play on Saturday, March 10 at 4 p.m. at Holy Cross. American returns to Jacobs Field on Saturday, March 17 when they host Colgate at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
