The No. 11 American University wrestling team recorded its first dual meet victory over an EWIA opponent this season and posted six decisions in a 23-13 dual meet win over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles never trailed in the match and opened the day with four straight victories, including two major decisions, to take a 17-0 lead. No. 1 Ryan Flores opened the match with six quick points for American after a forfeit at heavyweight before AU's Thomas Williams tallied a 4-3 decision at 125 lbs.
Corey Borshoff and No. 15 Matt Mariacher then posted back-to-back major decisions with Borshoff recording a 9-0 major decision at 133 lbs. followed by a 10-2 major decision by Mariacher at 141 lbs.
Bucknell responded by taking the next four bouts of the day. Kevin Tao dropped a tight 6-5 decision to Alex Pellicciotti at 149 lbs. and then Bucknell recorded a 15-5 major decision at 157 lbs. No. 3 Ganbayar Sanjaa wrestled up a weight class in the meet and dropped an 8-5 decision to Bucknell's Corey Lear.
Following a Bucknell decision at 174 lbs., the Bison had cut American's lead to 17-13 with two bouts remaining. Thomas Barreiro responded with a 6-1 decision at 184 lbs. to give the Eagles a 20-13 advantage.
In the final bout of the day, No. 19 Daniel Mitchell tallied a 5-1 decision over Tyler Lyster to give American the 23-13 victory.
The dual meet win is the sixth of the season for the Eagles as they improve their road record to 5-1 and pick up their first dual meet victory against an EIWA opponent.
American will return on February 12 at the National Duals Regional. The action will get underway at 10 a.m.
