Box Score Emily Burton tallied a career-high five goals and the Eagles held a 6-5 lead at the end of the first half, but it was not enough as the American University lacrosse team fell to Richmond, 12-11, on Wednesday afternoon.
American (2-1) took a 2-0 lead early before Richmond answered with back-to-back goals to tie it with 24 minutes left in the first half. The Eagles took a 5-3 lead off consecutive goals from Samantha Marshall and Burton before Richmond cut it to a one-point game once again.
Marshall added her second goal of the game on a free position shot at 4:13 but the Spiders closed out the half with a free position goal from Mary Flowers for the 6-5 American lead at the break.
Burton put the Eagles up once again with a goal just 40 seconds into the second half for the 7-5 lead. Burton continued to find the back of the net as she added her fifth goal of the day to give American an 8-6 lead. The Spiders tied the game on back-to-back goals before Marshall scored to give American a 9-8 lead with 14:21 remaining.
Richmond (1-3) tallied back-to-back goals once again to take a 10-9 lead before Marshall was able to tie it at 10. The Spiders added two more goals for the 12-10 lead with 2:59 remaining before a goal from Kimberly Collins with 1:05 left to play cut Richmond's lead to one. The Eagles had a free position shot in the final second but ran out of time as Richmond walked away with the 12-11 victory.
Marshall added four goals for the Eagles as Lauren Schoenberger tallied four points on two goals and two assists. Marshall and Emily Stankiewicz each recorded three draw controls as Kaska Komosinski posted eight saves in the loss. Caitlin Fifield led Richmond with three goals.
The Eagles conclude their homestand on Saturday, March 3 when they host Old Dominion at 1 p.m.
