Box Score A three-pointer from Ti'Asia McGeorge with 13.6 seconds remaining tied Sunday's game, setting up Alexis Dobbs' game-winning play. Dobbs knocked it away at mid-court, laying it in with 0.2 seconds remaining to lift the American University women's basketball team to a 48-46 victory over Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md.
McGeorge led the Eagles with 11 points, hitting three three-pointers. Geleisa George chipped in 10, going 4-for-6 from the floor, while Stephanie Anya, Dobbs and Jen Dumiak all finished with seven. Anya led the team with eight boards with Dobbs notching a team-high four assists.
"Our team showed a lot of character today in pulling out a good road win after trailing most of the game," said Head Coach Matt Corkery. "We were able to get some stops and timely baskets in the last eight minutes to close the gap. Alexis made a heck of a play to give us the lead in that final possession."
American (7-5) tallied the first five points of the game, holding the Mountaineers scoreless through the first four and a half minutes of play. The Mountaineers went on a 9-2 run to take their first lead of the game with 8:37 remaining in the half. Shaquilla Curtis kept the game close, coming up with the steal at half-court and laying it in to make it a one-point game, 23-22, with 2:29 left. A jumper from Tara Lonergan closed out the scoring and gave Mount St. Mary's a 25-22 lead heading into the intermission.
The Eagles shot 30.3 percent from the field in the first half, going just 1-for-9 from beyond the arc. The Mountaineers shot 31.6 percent from the floor, connecting on 3-of-7 shots from three-point range.
American used a 7-0 run in the second half to get within two, 31-29, early in the half. Mount St. Mary's (4-6) answered with a 13-0 run, holding the Eagles without a bucket for nearly six minutes. Dobbs ended the drought with a jumper at the foul line, with McGeorge knocking in back-to-back three's to cut American's deficit to 42-39 with 5:40 remaining.
The Mountaineers continued to hold off the Eagles' efforts to tie the game. American fought back within one but Sydney Henderson laid it in to keep the score at 46-43 with 1:48 to play. The Eagles called a timeout to set up the equalizer from McGeorge, with Dobbs securing American's second straight win in the final second.
Jacqueline Brewer led all scorers with 15 points, shooting 6-for-8 from the field with two three-pointers. Rachel Mathews posted a team-high seven boards for Mount St. Mary's.
American outshot Mount St. Mary's 35.1 to 34.1 percent for the game and 26.7 to 23.5 percent from beyond the arc.
The Eagles return home to Bender Arena to open the New Year, kicking off a three-game homestand against Fordham on Friday, January 4 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
