Box Score The American University women's basketball team never trailed in the second half, holding off a Drexel rally in the final minute on its way to a 58-52 victory on Friday night in Philadelphia, Pa. to snap the Dragons' three-game winning streak.
Alexis Dobbs led the Eagles with 17 points, going 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, and also dishing out a team-best five assists. Jen Dumiak added 12 points, going 5-for-9 from the floor. Shaquilla Curtis and Stephanie Anya led the team with five and four rebounds, respectively. American shot a season-high 47.1 percent from beyond the arc, shooting 47.9 percent from the floor for the game.
"I was really proud of the sustained effort that we had and I thought we played well for 40 minutes," said Head Coach Matt Corkery. "Three-point shooting is one of our strengths…We knew that making some three's would be critical for us to have success and we were able to do that with Alexis and Ti'Asia."
A deep three from Ti'Asia McGeorge put American (6-5) up 7-2 early before the Dragons answered with seven consecutive points, forcing the Eagles to call a timeout. Dobbs ended the run with a trey to give American back the advantage. Four straight points from Nicki Jones tied it at 17 with 5:19 left, but Dobbs drained a deep three to retake the lead. The two teams traded scores at the end of the half, with Geleisa George driving it in with 24 seconds remaining to send the Eagles into the intermission with the 26-23 advantage.
American shot 42.3 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point range, with the Dragons shooting 37.9 percent from the floor, going 1-for-5 from beyond the arc in the first half.
Drexel (7-3) tied it early in the second half before the Eagles posted six straight points, capped off by a steal from George at mid-court and the easy lay-in for the 34-28 lead as Drexel called the timeout. Back-to-back three's from Rachel Pearson and Hollie Mershon made it a two-point game, 39-37, with 10:58 to play.
Dobbs continued to connect from three-point range, keeping the Eagles up after consecutive buckets from the Dragons made it a one-point game. American was able to maintain its advantage, taking its largest lead of the game, 56-46, on a 7-0 run with 1:57 left in the game. Drexel continued to fight back, tallying six straight points to make it a three-point game with 40.3 seconds remaining. American was able to secure the victory with a pair of free throws from Dobbs for the 58-52 final score.
Mershon led Drexel with her second consecutive double-double, notching a game-high 22 points with 12 rebounds and pitching in a team-high four assists. The Dragons shot 36.2 percent from the field and 23.5 percent from beyond the arc. Drexel held the slight 33-31 advantage in rebounds for the game.
The Eagles close out their four-game road trip on Sunday, December 30 when they take on Mount St. Mary's at 1 p.m. American returns home to Bender Arena for a three-game homestand, taking on Fordham on Friday, January 4 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
