Box Score The American University women's basketball team had its
three-game winning streak snapped on Friday night at James Madison,
falling 65-49 to the Dukes in Harrisonburg, Va.
Arron
Zimmerman led the Eagles with a career-high 13 points,
besting her previous career mark of 10 in the first half. Zimmerman
was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor, going three-for-three from
beyond the arc. Michelle
Holmes also scored in double figures, posting a
career-high 10 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field.
Stephanie
Anya led the team with 10 rebounds, registering a
season-high five blocks. Jen
Dumiak and Micaela
Sancisi each dished out a team-best three
assists.
The contest went back-and-forth early before James Madison (4-6)
went on an 11-3 run to take a 17-11 lead with 12:07 remaining. The
Dukes added seven more after a pair of free throws from Geleisa
George.
Zimmerman sparked a 10-0 run by the Eagles, hitting her second
three of the day and forcing a James Madison turnover on the next
possession. Dumiak capped off the run with a lay-up inside the
paint to put the lead at 24-23 with 4:27 to play. James Madison
closed out the half with five straight points to take a 29-23 lead
into the break.
American (5-5) shot 33.3 percent from the floor in the first
half, going 5-for-10 from beyond the arc. The Dukes shot 35.1
percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point
range.
James Madison came out of the intermission with an 8-1 run to go
up 37-24 at the 18:08 mark, forcing the Eagles to call the timeout.
American chipped away at the Dukes' lead, with Holmes tallying her
first bucket of the day to cut James Madison's lead to 42-30 with
12:58 remaining. The Dukes answered with a three-pointer from
Precious Hall to open up a 7-0 run for the 49-30 advantage.
The Dukes continued to stifle American's offense. The Eagles cut
it to a 15-point game twice on a pair of free throws from Dumiak
and lay-in from Holmes after she knocked it away from Crystal Ross
with 4:31 to play. Ari Booth
drilled in a three and Holmes laid it in again after a dish from
Sancisi to close out the scoring for American before a pair of free
throws from Kirby Burkholder secured the 65-49 final
score.
Tarik Hislop and Hall led the Dukes with 16 points apiece.
Burkholder posted a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 11
rebounds. James Madison outshot the Eagles 38.9 to 34.6 percent
from the field and 46.2 to 42.9 percent from beyond the arc. The
Dukes also held the 53-34 advantage in rebounds for the game.
American will take a break for the holidays before taking on
another CAA opponent, Drexel, on Friday, December 28 at 4 p.m.
