David
Terao led the American University wrestling team with
his fifth place result at the 2012 Cliff Keen Las Vegas
Invitational as the Eagles finished 19th in the team standings.
"Overall we had a good experience, our wrestlers faced a number
of nationally ranked opponents and we know what we need to improve
upon for our first dual meet on Sunday and the National
Championships in March," said Head Coach Teague Moore. "Our guys wrestled well
and David performed to our expectations with his fifth place
finish. This result proves he can compete with the best in the
country."
Terao opened the second day of competition with an upset of No.
13 Sean Boyle of Michigan, registering a 7-6 decision to advance to
the consolation quarterfinals. He then posted a 9-8 decision over
Northern Colorado's Jesse Hillhouse before dropping an 8-1 decision
to Air Force's Josh Martinez. Terao bounced back in his next bout,
pinning Wyoming's Tyler Cox in 4:40 to earn fifth place at 125
lbs.
Blake
Herrin also advanced to the second day of the
tournament in the heavyweight division, but ended up on the short
end of a 4-1 decision to California Baptist's Charles Merrill in
his first match of the day.
The Eagles finished 19th out of 32 teams with 29.5 points while
Ohio State took home the team title for the second consecutive
year.
American will return to Bender Arena for its first dual meet of
the year, hosting cross-town rival No. 23 Maryland on Sunday,
December 9 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision
TV.
