The American University wrestling team stands in 19th place with two wrestlers remaining through the first day of competition at the 31st Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The tournament will continue tomorrow, Saturday, December 1 at 9 a.m. PST.
David Terao and Blake Herrin both fell in their quarterfinal matches on Friday night. Terao advanced to the quarterfinals at 125 lbs. after opening the tournament with a 6-4 decision over Nebraska-Kearney's Connor Bolling and pinning Navy's Sam Warne in 3:56. He then faced No. 4 Alan Waters of Missouri and lost by major decision, 11-0. Terao will face No. 13 Sean Boyle of Michigan in his next bout.
Herrin dropped a 10-2 major decision to No. 6 Chad Hanke of Oregon State in his quarterfinal match. The heavyweight earned a 6-3 decision over Northern Iowa's Cody Krumweide after receiving a bye in the first round. Herrin will take on Charles Merrill of California Baptist on Saturday in the consolation bracket.
John Boyle posted the lone upset of the day for the Eagles at 141 lbs. After a 10-2 major decision over Arizona State's Matthew Kraus, Boyle ended up on the short end of a 5-0 decision to Harvard's Steven Keith. In the consolation round, Boyle upset No. 12 Camryn Jackson of Michigan in sudden victory overtime, 6-4. He then dropped a 6-2 decision to Northern Iowa's Joey Lazor in the next round.
