Box Score

Three double-digit scorers paced the American University women's basketball team as it rolled to its second straight win, 85-57, over UMBC in its home opener on Tuesday night in Bender Arena.

"It's exciting to have the opportunity to play at home," said Head Coach Matt Corkery. "We've been on the road for the last four games so you could feel the energy today of the players really looking forward to getting the chance to be at home. I think that played a big part."

American (2-3) registered its largest offensive output of the year, shooting a season-best 54.2 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from beyond the arc, recording a season-high 10 three-pointers. Jen Dumiak matched her career-high with 21 points, going 9-for-15 from the floor, while Alexis Dobbs notched 18 points, sinking four three-pointers, and Geleisa George added 11 on 4-of-5 shooting. Dumiak and Abigail Fogg each grabbed a team-best five rebounds, with Dumiak also tallying six assists. Shaquilla Curtis, Dobbs and George picked up three steals apiece.

UMBC (3-4) kept the game tight at the start, using a 8-1 run to knot it at 16 with 11:25 left to play. Dumiak drilled in the three to give the Eagles back the advantage and a trey from Arron Zimmerman kicked off a 13-3 run by American for its first double-digit lead of the game, 34-23, at 5:19.

The Retrievers answered with nine consecutive points, capped off by a three from Raven Harris to make it a two-point game. Dobbs responded 15 seconds later, sinking her third three-pointer of the game to put the Eagles back up 37-32 with 2:38 remaining in the half. American continued to shut down UMBC's offense, heading into the break with seven consecutive points for the 44-32 advantage.

The Eagles shot 51.6 percent from the field in the first half, with UMBC shooting 52.2 percent. American made seven three-pointers in the first half as UMBC went 3-for-5 from three-point range.

American extended its run in the second half, taking a 20-point lead on a free throw by Michelle Holmes. The Eagles continued to build their lead, dominating the glass on both ends of the court. Dobbs sunk yet another trey on the dish from Ari Booth for the 66-42 advantage at 11:27. Brittany Crowell tried to respond with a three-pointer of her own, but Fogg was able to come up with the rebound on the miss and make the jumper on the other end of the floor.

The Eagles went up by 30 on a three-pointer from Ti'Asia McGeorge. Curtis had the steal from Harris on the next possession, laying it in for the 83-51 lead with 3:58 left in the game. A lay-up from Dumiak gave American its largest lead of the game, 85-51, before the Retrievers closed out the game with six consecutive points for the 85-57 final score.

"We picked up our effort defensively over the last two games and that showed today with us bringing good energy and doing that pretty consistently," said Corkery. "We were pretty consistent offensively the whole game, as well, being able to get field goals and not going for too many long drives without getting scoring opportunities, so that was good to see."

American held a 36-24 advantage in rebounds for the game, forcing 21 UMBC turnovers. The Retrievers shot 40.8 percent for the game, making just 4-of-10 shots from beyond the arc. Bria White led UMBC with 13 points while Keri Kleist had a team-high six rebounds.

The Eagles head back out on the road to take on Loyola (Md.) on Saturday, December 1 at 2 p.m. before returning to Bender Arena for back-to-back contests against Coppin State on Wednesday, December 5 at 7 p.m. and George Washington on Saturday, December 8 at 2 p.m.
