Women's Basketball Falls at #10 Maryland

Box Score

The American University women's basketball team faced a tough challenge at No. 10 Maryland on Wednesday night, but the Eagles continued to battle with the Terrapins before falling, 94-54.

Geleisa George led American in scoring, notching a career-high 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting with three steals. Jen Dumiak added nine points while Stephanie Anya posted a team-high four rebounds with two blocks. The Eagles shot 44.0 percent from the field, hitting five three-pointers in the second half.

"I felt like we were outmatched in a lot of different spots on the floor so they definitely won a lot of individual battles," said Head Coach Matt Corkery. "We played in spurts and did good things so I definitely think we can take some positives from how we played, especially on the offensive end in the second half."

American (0-3) stuck with the Terrapins early. George answered with the pull-up jumper for the 10-6 Maryland lead. The Terrapins went on a 10-0 run to break away before George added the lay-up to end the scoreless drought and cut the lead to 20-8 with 11:29 left in the first half.

Maryland (3-1) continued to build its advantage, but a lay-up from Dumiak on a fast break and a pull-up jumper from Arron Zimmerman put the score at 32-13 with 6:29 remaining. The Terrapins registered nine consecutive points for the 44-15 advantage before Ari Booth was able to end the run. The Eagles notched back-to-back buckets from Booth and Shaquilla Curtis before Tianna Hawkins added the final score of the first half for the 47-21 lead heading into the break.

American shot 47.4 percent from the field in the first half, with Maryland shooting 55.3 percent from the floor. The Terrapins held a 22-8 advantage in rebounds.

Maryland opened the second half outscoring American 14-4 for the 61-27 lead at 15:38. The Eagles were able to string together eight consecutive points on a jumper from Michelle Holmes and back-to-back threes from Ti'Asia McGeorge and Booth. Dumiak added a trey of her own before the Terrapins sunk a pair of three's to maintain their 71-36 advantage with 12:22 to play.

The Eagles continued to fight, with Dumiak and Anya each registering a bucket to put the score at 81:46. George also added back-to-back tallies down the stretch as Maryland walked away with the 94-54 win.

The Terrapins, who are ranked No. 10 in this week's AP and ESPN/USA Today Division I Coaches' Poll, were led by Hawkins with 15 points and nine boards. Hawkins shot 10-of-13 from the field to lead Maryland as the team shot 58.0 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc. The Terrapins outrebounded American, 45-19, for the game, with the team picking up 65 of their points in the paint.

American will close out its season-opening stretch of road games when it travels to Elon on Saturday, November 24 at 2 p.m. The Eagles will host UMBC for its home opener on Tuesday, November 27 at 7 p.m.
