The American University wrestling team placed four atop the podium at the Keystone Classic on Sunday, led by Kevin Tao's second place result as the team finished sixth in the overall standings.
Tao opened the tournament pinning Peter Ishiguro of Boston University in 2:22. He continued to add bonus points for American, earning a 10-2 major decision over Brooks Martino of Pennsylvania and then pinning Pennsylvania's Andrew Lenzi in 4:56. Tao fell to Josh Roosa of Bloomsburg in the 149 lbs. title match, coming up on the short end of a 5-2 decision.
Blake Herrin placed third in the heavyweight division, beginning his run with a 4-1 decision over Mike Kosoy of North Carolina State and then posting a 3-1 decision over Pennsylvania's Kyle Cowan. He dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 12 Adam Chalfant of Indiana in the semifinals. Herrin bounced back with a 2-1 decision over Greg Velasco of Rider and recorded a 3-1 decision against Kyle Cowan of Pennsylvania in the consolation semifinals.
David Terao also had a strong day for the Eagles at 125 lbs., finishing fourth. He opened the tournament pinning Jeffrey Ogburn of Appalachian State in 6:18 but ended up on the short end of a 1-0 decision to Brown's William Watterson. Terao responded by pinning Princeton's Max Roger in 47 seconds and posted a 5-2 decision over Sean Boylan of Bloomsburg. He recorded a 12-11 decision over Harvard's Jeff Ott to advance to the consolation finals but ended up on the short end of a 3-2 decision to Dominic Parisi of Appalachian State to place fourth.
Keithen Cast rounded out the placewinners for American with his sixth place result at 174 lbs., registering a 4-2 decision over Chris Smith of Bloomsburg to open the day. He recorded a 17-5 major decision over Brandon Lintner of Rider but fell to Boston University's Kyle Czarnecki by a 7-5 decision. He bounced back with a 15-5 major decision over Dominick Vetell of Appalachian State and a 10-3 decision against Duke's Trey Adamson. Cast dropped a 12-3 major decision to Ian Korb of Pennsylvania to advance to the fifth place bout, where he was forced to withdraw due to medical forfeit.
American improved to sixth in the team standings with 62.5 points after its eighth place result a year ago. Northwestern took home the team title with 156 points.
The Eagles return to the mat on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1 when they travel to the Las Vegas Invitational.
