#10 Wrestling Completes California Sweep With Triumph at #23 Stanford

The No. 10 American University won its third dual in a four-day stretch in California with a 18-17 victory at No. 23 Stanford Sunday afternoon in Palo Alto, Calif. The win marks the Eagles' fourth-straight dual victory.

American (4-4) earned the tight win as a result of bonus points as the Eagles and Stanford (5-5) split the 10 bouts. Thomas Williams, No. 14 Matt Mariacher, and No. 14 Daniel Mitchell recorded AU's three major decisions, which proved to be the difference in the dual.

The match began with Williams' 9-0 major decision at 125 lbs. over Stanford's Matt Sencenbaugh. A Corey Borshoff loss at 133 lbs. evened the match at four through two bouts.

The Eagles won the next three bouts, beginning with Mariacher's major decision at 141 lbs. over Alex Manley. Kevin Tao followed with an 8-3 decision against Timmy Boone and 149 lbs. and No. 4 Ganbayar Sanjaa then gave the Eagles a 14-4 lead midway through the dual with a 12-6 decision at 157 lbs. over Garrett Schaner.

AU, however, dropped the next three duals at 165 lbs., 174 lbs., and 184 lbs. to even the match at 14. Mitchell regained American's lead with an 11-0 major decision at 197 lbs. over Alan Yen, which was enough to offset Blake Herrin's 2-0 setback at heavyweight to close the dual.

"This win against Stanford topped off a fantastic California trip," Head Coach Teague Moore commented. "I thought Matt [Mariacher], Ganbayar [Sanjaa], and Danny [Mitchell] really wrestled aggressively today and put forth impressive performances. Also, Kevin [Tao] is becoming a confident and all-american style wrestler."

American completes its California roadtrip with dual victories over Cal State Bakersfield, No. 19 Cal Poly, and No. 23 Stanford over a four-day period. Sanjaa, Tao, and Williams each completed the trip with perfect 3-0 records.

The Eagles will seek their fifth-consecutive dual win on Thursday, January 19 when they welcome Hofstra to Bender Arena in the home opener. AU will then host North Carolina State on Friday, January 20. Both duals will begin at 8 p.m. and both will be carried live on Eagles Vision TV, part of AUeagles.com. Real-time updates of the duals can also be found on AU wrestling's Twitter page.
