#10 Field Hockey Hosts Penn and #7 Princeton This Weekend

Box Score

The No. 10 American University field hockey team will host both Penn and Princeton this weekend at Jacobs Field live on Eagles Vision TV. The Eagles will face the Quakers at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 2 before taking on No. 7 Princeton on Sunday, September 4 at 2:00 p.m. in the team's fifth annual Phil Jacobs event.

American (0-1) lost its first game of the year 4-1 on Sunday against No. 12 Old Dominion. Jenn Bradley scored the lone goal for the Eagles in the 54th minute past Old Dominion goalkeeper Devon Seifert. Gina Hofmann had a game-high four shots for the Eagles, while Shelly Montgomery and Kati Rothenhoefer each had one shot. Bradley has now scored four goals in American's last five games dating back to last season, including a goal in both Patriot League Tournament contests.

The Quakers (0-0) will open their season against the Eagles on Friday. Penn features eight freshman and six sophomores on their young roster, and are looking to improve on last year's 3-14 record. The Quakers finished last in the Ivy League in 2010, going just 1-6 in conference play, but are returning two of their leading scorers in Kirstin Snyder (3) and Julia Tahan (3). Penn also returns senior goalkeeper Kieran Sweeney who had a 4.18 goals against average last year with a 1-6 record.

This will be the first-ever meeting between American and Penn.

No. 7 Princeton (0-0) is set to begin its season Friday at Bucknell before facing the Eagles. The Tigers are looking for their seventh straight Ivy League title this season and their 17th in the last 18 years. Princeton went 14-5 last year but lost its top four scorers.  Senior Rachel Neufeld and Junior Molly Goodman are each returning to the Tigers after scoring 12 points apiece last year while sophomore goalkeeper Christina Maida featured a 1.20 goals against average and had a .726 save percentage in 2010.

American and Princeton squared off last season on the Tigers' home turf where the Eagles came away with a 3-2 victory. Princeton was ranked fourth in the country at the time and the win marked American's first over a top five team since 2004. Christine Fingerhuth '10 scored two first-half goals to lead the Eagles as Hannah Weitzman '11 made seven saves in the cage to preserve the victory.

American will be hosting its fifth annual Phil Jacobs match Sunday versus the Tigers. The event attracted a record 1,013 fans last year when the Eagles defeated the 14th-ranked Duke Blue Devils.  All AU students with a valid ID will enjoy a free BBQ courtesy of Bon Appetit on Sunday as well as free Coca-Cola products and free Robeks smoothies.
