Stanford Holds Off Field Hockey’s Second-Half Push

STANFORD, Calif. –– American field hockey fell to the ACC's Stanford on Sunday afternoon after the Cardinal claimed two first-half goals to ultimately win 3-1 over the Eagles in California.

Notable
  • Kaleigh Missimer scored AU's lone goal on a penalty stroke. Missimer had two penalty stroke goals in the 2025 season despite being unavailable for full field play due to injury.
  • Despite no shots taken in the first half, American finished the game with eight shots, six of which were on target. The Cardinal took 12 shots, eight on goal.
  • The Eagles had three penalty corner attempts in the second half, all coming in the fourth, while Stanford had three corner attempts, all in the first half.
How It Happened
The Cardinal took an early lead, scoring within a minute of the initial pushback. The home squad had the offensive momentum on its side in the first period with six shots, four on goal, compared to AU's zero shots.

Stanford's second goal came within 30 seconds of the second period starting, doubling their lead, up 2-0.

At the 7:07 mark in the third, the Eagles were awarded a penalty stroke after a lengthy review and Missimer beat the keeper to get AU on the board, down 2-1. A minute later though, Stanford's Bea Varley would sink a goal after a scramble in front of the cage. The Cardinal retook a two goal, 3-1, lead.

The Cardinal were able to remain strong defensively and claim the win over American on the road in California.

Head Coach Jennings
"We had a tough loss today against a very strong and structured Stanford team. They were dominant early and capitalized on their chances, which put us under serious pressure. We stepped up in the fourth and created some strong chances, but ultimately it was a case of too little, too late.

"It will be important for us to incorporate the lessons from opening weekend into our play when we return to action versus Richmond on Friday."

Coming Up
The Eagles return home to Jacobs Complex for a three-game home stint, starting with Richmond on Friday, September 4. Then, they'll tackle App State two days later on Sunday, Sep. 6.
