Jen Dumiak scored a career-high 19 points to pace the American University women's basketball team to an impressive 77-52 win over Western Michigan Friday evening in Bender Arena.
Dumiak's output came on 6-of-7 from the floor, including a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond-the-arc. She grabbed five rebounds as well, marking another career-best. Sarah Kiely matched her career-high with 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting in only 19 minutes. Alexis Dobbs added 13 points on 4-of-6 from the floor along with five rebounds and four assists. The trio of Dumiak, Kiely, and Dobbs combined to score 46 points on 16-of-19 shooting.
American (8-5) set the tone of the game early on, racing out to a 13-0 advantage at the first media timeout. Ebony Edwards opened the game with a bucket and was followed by a layup from Lisa Strack. Kiely then knocked home back-to-back baskets and Dobbs followed with a three before another Strack jumper. AU held Western Michigan (3-9) without a point for the first 6:02 of the game.
The Eagles continued to apply the pressure, extending the advantage to 24-7 midway through the half on a Dumiak jumper. The lead was eventually pushed past 20 on a three by Dumiak, 31-9 at the 6:02 mark. AU led by as many as 27 points in the first half before taking a 49-25 margin into halftime on the strength of 61.3 percent shooting.
AU maintained a lead of at least 22 points throughout the second half and it got as large as 32 at 73-41 with 4:06 to play.
For the game, the Eagles shot a season-best 51.9 percent from the field, including a 40 percent clip (6-of-15) from three-point range. AU was also 17-of-18 from the free throw line for 94.4 percent, the eighth-highest single-game free throw percentage in program history.
The Eagles will close the non-conference portion of their schedule with a visit to local-rival George Washington on Monday, January 2 at 2 p.m. AU will kick off Patriot League play next Saturday, January 7 at Colgate.
