Box Score
Jack Scott scored with 48 seconds remaining in regulation to break a scoreless match and propel the American University men's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 victory over Lehigh Saturday afternoon at a cold and snowy Reeves Field.
With the win, American (7-10-1, 5-1-0 PL) remains alone in first place in the Patriot League and officially clinches a berth in the four-team conference tournament, which will be played November 11-13 at the site of the regular season champion. The Eagles have now reached the Patriot League Tournament four straight seasons and eight times overall since joining the conference in 2001. AU will clinch the regular season title with either a win or draw next Saturday at Holy Cross or a Colgate loss or draw on Saturday against Navy.
The game-winner was setup when Michael Roberts fed a long ball from just inside midfield into the zone. Lehigh goalkeeper Ciaran Nugent came out to play it in traffic and fumbled the ball amongst pressure from Alassane Kane. Kane quickly retrieved the loose ball and crossed it to an open Scott, who fired his shot from five yards out into the back of the net.
Lehigh (7-3-5, 3-2-1 PL) had its best scoring opportunity in the match in the 55th minute when Daniel Odenwelder fired a shot following a scramble in front of the goal. AU's Cristobal Soto was just in front of the goal line to make the defensive save, which kept the match scoreless.
AU outshot the Mountain Hawks by a 16-7 margin in the match, including an 11-5 advantage over the final 45 minutes. The Eagles recorded four shots on goal compared to three for Lehigh.
Prior to the match, AU's five seniors -- Matt Makowski, Michael Roberts, Scott, Alex Tilatti, and Mark Wysocki -- were honored in a Senior Day ceremony. The senior class has helped the Eagles record a 17-6-4 conference record over the last four seasons, which has included Patriot League Championship Game appearances in each of the past two years.
American will close out the regular season next Saturday, November 5 at Holy Cross. The action from Worcester, Mass., will get underway at 3 p.m.
