Women's Basketball's Win Streak Ends at 11 in 64-50 Loss at Army

Box Score

The American University women's basketball team took a program-record 11-game winning streak into an energetic Christl Arena on Wednesday night, but Army proved to be too much in a 64-50 victory in West Point, N.Y. Erin Anthony led the Black Knights with a game-high 22 points, while American's Liz Leer and Lisa Strack recorded double-digit performances with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

American (13-5, 3-1 Patriot League) opened the game with back-to-back buckets by Strack and Leer and eventually took a 9-7 lead on a pair of Alexis Dobbs free throws at the 14:40 mark. Army (10-8, 4-0 PL) scored the game's next five points to open up a 12-9 advantage before a 10-5 AU run -- capped by a Nicole Ryan three -- gave the Eagles a 19-17 lead with 8:52 to go in the opening half.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, this would mark their final lead of the game. A 7-0 Army spurt put the score at 24-19 in the Black Knights' favor before consecutive baskets by AU's Ashley Yencho and Ebony Edwards got the Eagles back on track. Army, however, would take a 29-24 advantage into halftime on the strength of 44.4 percent shooting in the first half.

The Eagles kept the deficit close in the early stages of the second half, and eventually got within one, 33-32, on a Leer jumper at the 13:46 mark. But back-to-back buckets by Army's Anthony extended the Black Knights' lead back to five. Moments later, a three by Meagan Doucette pushed Army's lead to eight, 46-38, with 9:03 to go.

American continued to fight to keep the game within striking distance, as a Tori Halvorsen three-pointer cut the deficit to five, 51-46, with under five minutes left. But five unanswered Army points pushed the lead to double digits for the first time in the game. AU was unable to mount a late charge and fell by 14 points.

Army was able to sustain the second-half advantage thanks to 56.5 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes. The Black Knights finished the game an even 50 percent from the field, while AU shot 42.9 percent. Army also held a 32-20 edge in rebounding.

"The turning point of the game was our inability to get stops in the second half," Head Coach Matt Corkery commented. "Army made more hustle plays and controlled the boards as well. They deserved the win. As for us, we need to learn from this experience and become mentally tougher as we continue through conference play."

Anthony led all scorers with 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting along with 11 rebounds, marking her fifth straight double-double and 10th of the season. Molly Yardley had 13 points off the bench for the Black Knights while Nalini Hawkins chipped in 11.

Leer led the way for American with her 12 points on 4-of-6 from the field, her ninth consecutive double-digit scoring performance. She added five rebounds and a career-best five steals. Strack registered 10 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Halvorsen and Ryan scored nine and eight points, respectively. Ryan also recorded four steals.

The loss snapped AU's 11-game win streak, marking its first loss since November 27 at Texas Tech. The 11 victories in a row tie the longest win streak in program history, which was also accomplished during the 2007-08 season.

AU will return to Bender Arena for its next two contests, where it will look to extend its current 13-game home winning streak. The Eagles will begin the two-game homestand on Saturday, January 22 with a 2 p.m. tip against Holy Cross and will then host Navy next Wednesday, January 26 at 7 p.m.
