Amanda Makoid, Samantha Marshall and Lauren Schoenberger each scored three
goals to lead a balance offensive attack as the American University
women's lacrosse team rolled to a 19-12 victory over
Lafayette Saturday afternoon at Jacobs Field. The win improves
AU's record to 3-1 in Patriot League play.
American (5-7, 3-1 PL) began fast, scoring the first five goals
of the game in the first 14-plus minutes. Schoenberger connected on
the first two scores off assists from Emily Stankiewicz and Makoid.
Marshall, Makoid and Paige Lin recorded AU's next
three goals to take the 5-0 lead.
Lafayette (2-10, 1-3 PL) countered with back-to-back goals to
cut the deficit to three, although Stankiewicz and Makoid each
knocked home their second goals of the game for AU to regain a
five-goal lead, 7-2, with 14:03 to play in the first half. After
the Leopards cut the lead to 7-3, American responded with three
straight scores to end the half off the sticks of Marshall, Bernadette Maher and Kimberly Collins to take a 11-4
advantage into halftime.
The Eagles began the second half in the same fashion that they
ended the opening 30 minutes, as Collins and Lisa Schaaf knocked home the opening
two goals to give AU a commanding 13-4 lead with 24:44 to go. But
Lafayette did not go away easily, as the Leopards recorded the
game's next six goals over an 11-plus minute stretch to trim
AU's lead to 13-10 with 11:48 remaining.
With all the momentum working in Lafayette's favor, Emily Burton recorded a key
game-changing goal for the Eagles to take a 14-10 lead at the 10:05
mark. Scores by Schoenberger and Maher made it a three-goal run for
American, which put AU up 16-10 with 5:29 left.
The Leopards attempted one final comeback, as they trimmed the
lead back to four, 16-12, with just over two minutes to play, but
Marshall's third goal of the game with 1:37 remaining sealed
the outcome. The Eagles added two more late goals to come away with
the 19-12 victory.
AU's Makoid recorded a game-high five points on three
goals and two assists, while Stankiewicz accumulated four points on
two goals and two assists. Along with Marshall and
Schoenberger's three scores apiece, Collins registered three
points on two goals and an assist. Ten different Eagles found the
back of the net, as American scored a season-high 19 goals.
Additionally, Emma Larkin registered career-bests
with six caused turnovers and five groundballs. Makoid earned a
team-high five draw controls, while Stankiewicz had four. Frankie Solomon played all 60 minutes
in goal for AU, recording six saves to earn the win.
Lafayette was paced with three goals each from Margaux LeBuffe
and Erin Steele. Addie Godfrey added two goals and an assist for
the Leopards.
The Eagles, which sit in second place in the conference with a
3-1 record, will hit the road for their next two contests,
beginning Wednesday, April 7 at Patriot League-leading Navy. The
Midshipmen currently own a 3-0 conference record. Game time from
Annapolis, Md., is set for 5 p.m.
