The American University women's lacrosse team fell to
Colgate Saturday afternoon at Jacobs Field, 11-9, in the
team's Patriot League opener. Lisa Schaaf scored her second goal of
the game to put the Eagles ahead 7-6 in the second half but a
flurry of goals midway through the period helped the Raiders to the
victory.
Colgate (2-4, 1-0) struck first with a pair of goals to take a
2-0 lead less than three minutes in. Paige Lin found the back of the net at the
19:28 mark to bring American (2-5, 0-1) to within one before Samantha Marshall's goal
with 17:47 remaining tied the score at two. The Raiders once again
took a two-goal lead with back-to-back tally's but scores by
Emily Stankiewicz and Lauren Schoenberger evened the game at
four with 10:31 to go.
American trailed 6-5 heading into the intermission after
Schaaf's first goal of the afternoon with 23 seconds on the
clock cut another two-goal Colgate lead in half. The Eagles then
tied the score at six after the break on Lin's second score
off a free position attempt and then took their first lead of the
day, 7-6, on Scaaf's second score with 19:34 remaining.
Colgate scored the game's next five goals, however, to
open an 11-7 advantage with 11:21 to play. An Amanda Makoid free position goal at the 8:22
mark made it a three goal game, 11-8, before Schoenberger's
second goal of the day pulled American to within two, 11-9.
The Eagles had four good looks at the goal in the final four
minutes but were unable to find the back of the net. Emily Burton's shot with 2:37 to
go went wide and gave the ball back to Colgate, allowing the
Raiders to burn off most of the remaining clock. Maeve Koch forced a turnover with just 20
seconds to play which resulted in a Schaaf shot but her attempt was
saved as time expired, giving Colgate the final 11-9 margin.
Lin, Schaaf and Schoenberger each scored two goals to lead
American with Schoenberger also picking up an assist for a total of
three points. Makoid, Marshall and Stankiewicz accounted for the
Eagles other scores while Burton was credited with an assist on
Schoenberger's second goal. Laura Dawson picked up three ground
balls to lead American's defensive efforts as Marshall caused
a team-high three turnovers. Kaska Komosinski played all 60 minutes
in goal for the Eagles and recorded 10 saves against 21 shots on
goal.
American will return to action on Wednesday, March 17, against
UMBC. Game time from Baltimore, Md., is set for 4:00 p.m.
