Schoenberger Nets Four Goals But Women's Lacrosse Edged 11-10 at Drexel in Season Opener

Box Score

Sophomore Lauren Schoenberger matched her career-high with four goals, but it was not enough as the American University women's lacrosse team came up on the short end of an 11-10 decision at Drexel on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles scored the last five goals of the game to close the deficit, but was unable to knot the score in the final minutes.

Drexel (2-0) opened the game with six consecutive goals before American (0-1) got on the board with an unassisted Brit Ferguson goal with 4:33 to play in the first half. The Dragons scored another goal to extend its lead to 7-1, although freshman Kimberly Collins responded for the Eagles with her first career strike at 1:02 to trim the halftime deficit to five.

AU came out firing to begin the second period with back-to-back goals in the first 5:41 to get within three, 7-4. Senior Amanda Makoid converted first and assisted on the second goal, which was converted by freshman Samantha Marshall. The Dragons, however, would score four of the next five, eventually taking a 11-5 lead with 13:39 to play. American's lone goal during the stretch was scored by sophomore Bernadette Maher with Schoenberger picking up the assist.

Facing a six-goal deficit with time winding down, the Eagles refused to go away easily, scoring the game's final five goals. Schoenberger had a hand in all five of the goals, scoring four of them and assisting on the other.  Maher, Makoid and sophomore Emma Larkin also recorded assists during the stretch. Sophomore Emily Stankiewicz scored the fourth goal during the run off a feed from Schoenberger.

Schoenberger's final goal came with 2:23 to play to trim AU's deficit to one, but the Eagles were unable to muster a game-tying goal. The game ended with the Eagles falling by an 11-10 margin.

Schoenberger recorded six points on the afternoon, which sets a new career-best. Her four goals match her previous career-high, which was set versus Virginia Tech last season. Freshman Laura Dawson also had a breakout game for the Eagles with a team-high six groundballs and three caused turnovers.

Goalkeeper Frankie Solomon made 16 saves in goal for the Eagles as AU was outshot by a 33-26 margin.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, February 20 as they visit Ohio State. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
