The American University wrestling team will close out its home
schedule this Saturday, February 13, against Rutgers while
celebrating 'Senior Day' for the seven senior
student-athletes on this year's squad. The Eagles will also compete
against local rival Maryland on Friday, February 12.
American will enter the weekend having won each of its last five
dual meets to improve the team's overall record to 7-6 on the year.
The Eagles earned a 21-16 victory at Binghamton in their last time
out, winning six of 10 weight classes with three wins coming by way
of major decisions.
The Eagles are led by four student-athletes currently featured
by IntermatWrestle.com in its latest national rankings and boast
seven wrestlers who have a winning record in their starting lineup.
Senior Mike
Cannon and junior Steve
Fittery are both ranked #4 in their weight class and
headline American's deep roster. Cannon is 18-1 on the year at 184
lbs. and has won seven straight bouts with bonus points. His
victory at Binghamton improved his career record to 110-18, tying
him with 2007 NCAA National Champion Josh
Glenn for second place on the school's career wins
list. Fittery, meanwhile, is 24-1 this season at 157 lbs. and is
riding an 18-match win streak.

Borshoff and Jasen
Borshoff have also been featured in the national polls
all season and this week are ranked 11th and
16th, respectively. K. Borshoff is 17-2 at 149 lbs. and
has an eight-match win streak while J. Borshoff is 17-4 at 125 lbs.
and riding a five-match win streak. American's lineup also features
Thomas
Williams who has posted a 20-10 mark at 133 lbs., Jordan
Lipp who is 17-12 at 141 lbs., Daniel
Mitchell who is 1-1 at 197 lbs. and the combination of
Mingo
Grant and Blake
Herrin at heavyweight who are 14-6 and 10-8,
respectively.
American will first take to the mat on Friday in College Park,
Md., against the Terrapins at 7:00 p.m. Maryland is 16-4 in dual
meets this season and most recently defeated George Mason, 35-6, to
claim its third straight victory. Five Terrapins appeared in this
week's IntermatWrestle.com rankings headlined by #3 Taylor Hudson
at 197 lbs. Hudson is 33-2 on the year. Also in the rankings were
#12 Steven Bell (20-5) at 133 lbs., #9 Alex Krom (14-5) at 141
lbs., #14 Josh Asper (27-6) at 165 lbs. and #5 Mike Letts (19-4) at
174 lbs.
On Saturday, the Eagles will host Rutgers in their final home
dual meet of the season at 7:30 p.m. The Scarlet Knights are 13-2-1
in dual meets this season and defeated Navy in their last time out,
23-10, to claim their sixth straight victory. Dominick Russo and
Lamar Brown have been at the forefront of Rutgers' success this
season and are ranked eighth and 18th, respectively, in
this week's IntermatWrestle.com rankings. Russo has posted a 25-4
mark at heavyweight while Brown has gone 19-5 at 197 lbs.
125-pounder Joseph Langel holds a 23-5 record while 157-pounder
Daryl Cocozzo is 20-7. Before making their way into Tenleytown,
Rutgers will wrestle Liberty on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Lynchburg,
Va.
Immediately before Saturday's dual, American University will
celebrate the careers of the seven graduating student-athletes from
this year's squad. The class of 2010 has been one of the most
heralded recruiting classes in the program's history, helping the
Eagles to three straight top-30 finishes at the NCAA Championships
and twice being named the NWCA Champions of the Classroom.
