Men's Soccer Suffers First Conference Loss, Falls 2-1 at Lehigh

Box Score

Jamie Davin gave the American University men's soccer team a lead less than a minute into Saturday night's match at Lehigh, but the Mountain Hawks rallied with two second-half goals to prevail with the 2-1 victory.

Davin got American (6-7-1, 3-1-1 Patriot League) on the scoreboard 58 seconds into the match as he controlled a loose ball and fired a shot past Lehigh goalkeeper Jonathan Nydell. The score is Davin's second of the season and gives him 10 points on the season, second most on the team.

The Eagles held the 1-0 advantage through halftime, but Lehigh (7-5-2, 3-1-1 PL) found the equalizer in the 56th minute when Austin Decker snuck a shot past AU goalkeeper Matt Makowski.

The Mountain Hawks scored the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute when Neal Meichionni crossed a pass to James Graf, who headed a shot by Makowski.

Lehigh outshot American by a slim 11-9 margin in the match. Only five total shots on goal were recorded in the 90 minutes, two of which were by the Eagles. Nick Kapus registered a game-high four shots for AU, including one on target.

"We played well in the first half, but lost some of our momentum in the second half," said Head Coach Todd West. "We wasted a number of offensive opportunities, which seems to be a theme that is developing and is something that we need to improve on."

With the win, Lehigh moves into a second place tie in the Patriot League standings with American, as the two squads now have identical 3-1-1 conference records and 10 points. Colgate currently leads the conference standings with 13 points (4-0-1), while Bucknell and Navy are knotted in fourth with 8 points apiece (2-1-2).

The Eagles will be return to action this Tuesday, October 26 when they host Alabama-Birmingham at 3 p.m. for their final non-conference match of the season. AU will then welcome Patriot League foe Holy Cross to Reeves Field next Saturday, October 30 at 1 p.m. for their final home match of the season. Both matches can be watched live on Eagles Vision TV, part of AUeagles.com.
