Box Score On the strength of a goal and an assist by Jamie
Davin, the American University men's soccer team
improved to 2-0 in Patriot League play with a 2-0 victory over Army
on Saturday night in West Point, N.Y.
Davin scored the first goal of the match, which occurred on a
penalty kick in the 72nd minute, to give American (5-4, 1-0 PL) a
1-0 advantage. The play was setup when Davin made a run into Army's
goalbox, and was taken down by a Black Knight defender. Davin
stepped up for the penalty kick, and buried the shot into the
top-left of the goal.
American had a golden opportunity to take a two-goal lead when
the Eagles earned a second penalty kick. In the 87th minute,
Mike
Worden's shot was stopped on a quality save by Army
goalkeeper Ryan Currens.
Moments later, however, the Eagles were able to add a late
insurance goal when Kapus scored in the 90th minute off a feed from
Davin. Kapus' second score of the season set the final margin
at 2-0 in favor of the Eagles.
American goalkeeper Matt
Makowski recorded two saves to earn the shutout, his
second of the season and 13th of his career.
"The first half was very evenly played. Army came out with
tremendous energy and I am not sure that we matched it," Head
Coach Todd West said. "I challenged the guys
to raise the energy in the second half and the improved work
rate led to more scoring opportunities. Overall it was a
hard-fought conference win on the road. Army is an improved team
and we are happy with the result."
Davin's goal was his second game-winner of the season, and
fourth of his career. The senior now has eight points in 2010 on
two goals and four assists. Additionally, this is the second time
in which he has recorded a goal and an assist against the Black
Knights, as he registered another three-point effort in last year's
4-0 win at Reeves Field.
American dominated the match on the stat sheet, outshooting Army
(1-8, 0-2 PL) by a 19-7 margin, including a 9-2 advantage in shots
on goal. The Eagles accumulated seven corner kicks compared
to four for Army.
With Saturday's triumph, AU has won each of the previous four
matchups against the Black Knights, and seven of the last
eight.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, October 6 when
they host Georgetown in a non-conference matchup. Game time is set
for 3 p.m.. Like all AU men's soccer home matches, it can be
watched live on Eagles Vision TV, part of
AUeagles.com.
AU will return to Patriot League play next Saturday, October 9
at Lafayette.
