Bonus Point Victories Power Wrestling Past Duke, 38-7

The American University wrestling team rode bonus point victories from #3 Mike Cannon, #12Kyle Borshoff and Thomas Williams to a 38-7 victory over Duke on Saturday night in Bender Arena. Cannon and Williams earned a pair of first period falls over their respective opponents while Borshoff recorded a third period tech-fall.

Action began at 125 lbs. where #18 Jasen Borshoff earned a 3-2 decision over Peter Terrezza. The two took a 0-0 tie into the second period where Terrezza escaped from his down starting position after 25 seconds to take a 1-0 lead. J. Borshoff evened the score up at 1 with a quick escape in the third and then scored the only takedown of the match with a reverse bear hug for a 3-1 advantage. Terrezza scored an escape point to move to within one, 3-2, but J. Borshoff controlled the action with double underhooks after the final restart to take the victory.

Williams made quick work of Nick Adamo at 133 lbs., pinning the Blue Devil at the 2:12 mark of the first period. Williams scored on a takedown just 25 seconds into the match and used a half nelson to turn Adamo for three back points. After a second set of back points were awarded, Williams used one final half-nelson to turn Adamo and get the pin.

Jordan Lipp kept the ball rolling for American at 141 lbs., scoring an 8-5 decision over Mike Bell to move the Eagles ahead 12-0 in the team scores. Lipp scored three takedowns in the first period to go on top 6-3 and accrued nearly two minutes of riding time in the process. Bell moved the score to 6-4 with an escape in the second but would get no closer as the two remained neutral for the duration of the frame. Lipp scored an escape of his own early in the third to move the score to 7-4 and cruised to the 8-5 victory with riding time.

K. Borshoff had his way with Chris Piccolello at 149 lbs., scoring an 18-2 tech-fall at 6:37. The 2009 All-American got in on a single leg early in the first period for a 2-0 lead and later added three back points for a 5-0 lead. With 2:40 of riding time already accrued from the first period, K. Borshoff scored a quick escape in the second and hit Piccolello with a leg sweep midway through the frame to move the score to 8-0. With three more back points, K. Borshoff took an 11-0 advantage into the third. From a neutral starting position, K. Borshoff scored on a double-leg to ahead 13-0, cut Piccolello and got in on a single leg for a 15-1 lead, and then cut Piccolello again and scored with one final single leg to end the match, 18-2, with riding time.

The Eagles continued to pile on the points at 157 lbs. and 165 lbs. as #3 Steve Fittery and Tanner Shaffer received victories by forfeit. Duke would  flip the script on American at 174 lbs., however, as Voris Tejada earned the Blue Devils first victory of the day, 9-4, over Phillip Barreiro to move the team scores to 29-3.

Cannon got American back on track as he pinned Diego Bencomo just 2:27 into the 184 lbs. bout. Cannon, a two-time All-American, scored a quick takedown off the opening whistle and then used a cradle to score three back points. Bencomo scored an escape point after the nearfall to move the score to 5-1 but was taken down shortly after by a Cannon single leg. Cannon was able to turn Bencomo after the takedown and put both his shoulders to the mat at the 2:27 mark.

Duke scored a second victory at 197 lbs. as John Barone earned a major decision over Kenneth Clessas, 13-0.

In the final bout of the day, heavyweight Mingo Grant won a 7-4 decision over Robert Holbrook. Grant scored on a single leg late in the first for a 2-0 lead but an escape by Holbrook moved the score to 2-1 heading into the second. Grant began the second period down and quickly escaped to retake a two-point advantage 3-1. Holbrook scored an escape early in the third to bring the score to 3-2 but a Grant takedown extended the margin to 5-2. After another Holbrook escape, Grant was able to score off a counter shot to secure the victory, 7-4.
