Junior Daniel
Shannon scored two goals on Saturday night to lead the American
University men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over No. 19 George Mason.
This victory, combined with American's 2-0 win over George
Washington on Wednesday night, gives the Eagles their fifth D.C.
College Cup title in the nine-year history of the tournament.
American (2-0) got on the board in the 23rd minute with
Shannon's first goal of the match. From 30 yards out, Shannon fired
a rocket past George Mason goalkeeper Sean Kelley into the left
corner of the goal. Sophomore Jack Scott
was credited with the assist.
The Eagles kept that advantage through halftime and deep into
the second stanza until Shannon added his second goal of the match,
with an assist by junior David
Menzie, in the 83rd minute to give American a 2-0 lead. After
Menzie fired a shot on goal, Shannon was able to put the rebound
into the back of the net.
George Mason (1-1), currently ranked 19th in the country by
SoccerAmerica, didn't go down without a fight. Draymond Washington
put the Patriots on the scoreboard in the 87th minute to cut the
Eagles' advantage in half. American was able to hold on over the
match's final few minute to preserve its 2-1 victory.
American goalkeeper Matt
Makowski played well for the Eagles, allowing one goal and
recording five saves.
In the match, each team fired 15 shots, while the Eagles held a
7-6 advantage in shots on goal. American junior Nick Kapus
and senior Luis
Martinez each recorded a game-high four shots.
Shannon was named the D.C. College Cup's Most Valuable Player
for his play over the two-match tournament. His two-goal effort
versus George Mason matched his career-high, which also occurred in
American's 2-1 victory over Princeton on September 12, 2008.
Additionally, senior Cooper
Bryant, Martinez and Menzie were named to the All-Tournament
Team.
"Tonight was a great team win," commented American Head Coach Todd West.
"The team played outstanding and we created several quality scoring
opportunities. I am very proud of my team's performances in the
D.C. College Cup."
American will open its home slate on next Friday, September 11,
at 3 p.m. against Princeton. The match will be broadcast live on
the new Eagles Vision
TV channel, featuring multiple camera angles, a live scoreboard
and analysis from a studio broadcast team and fieldside reporters.
