The American University men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw
against James Madison on Wednesday night in Harrisonburg, Va. After
falling behind early, AU senior Nidhal
Charfi scored his first-career goal to tie the match
in the second half.
James Madison (5-1-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a
goal in the sixth minute. Kieran Rice converted for the Dukes with
Paul Wyatt and C.J. Sapong picking up the assists.
American (4-3-1) trailed for the next 60-plus minutes until
Charfi connected in the 71st minute from 12 yards out to knot the
score at one. On the play, junior Daniel
Shannon was credited with his team-leading third
assist of the season. Charfi's conversion was the first goal
allowed by James Madison since its first game of the season.
With the score tied 1-1 through the 90 minutes of regulation
time, the teams battled in 20 minutes of sudden-death overtime,
although neither team was able to score a game-winner.
James Madison outshot the Eagles 16-12 in the match, and held a
5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore Jack
Scott led American with three shots, and senior
Colin
Zizzi recorded two shots, one of which was on goal.
Sophomore Matt
Makowski played all 110 minutes in goal for the
Eagles, and recorded three saves.
This is the third consecutive meeting that American and James
Madison have battled to a draw. Last season, the two squads also
played to a 1-1 tie, while in 2007, the match ended scoreless.
"This was a good result against a quality opponent," said
American Head Coach Todd West.
"It was a tough match and the field conditions weren't the best but
we battled back and earned a tough away result."
