The American University men's soccer team came up on the short
end of a 2-0 decision to William and Mary on a picture-perfect
Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field.
William and Mary (3-2) scored one goal in each half, which
proved to be enough for the victory. In the 26th minute, the
Tribe's Andrew Hoxie fired a free kick from just outside the
goalbox into the back left corner of the net to give William and
Mary a 1-0 lead. The Tribe added a second goal in the 52nd minute
on an Alan Koger header, which snuck over the outstretched arms of
American goalkeeper Matt
Makowski. Jeremy Harris was credited with the assist
for William and Mary.
American (2-3) outshot William and Mary in the match, 18-10, and
both teams fired five shots on goal. Junior Daniel
Shannon led the Eagles with six shots, including three
on goal. Senior Colin
Zizzi recorded two shots on goal on four total shots.
The best scoring opportunity for the Eagles came in the 23rd
minute when freshman Ryan
Morales hit the left post with a short-range shot.
William and Mary goalkeeper Andrew McAdams was solid in net for the
Tribe, recording five saves in his second shutout of the season.
"I think the thing that troubled us the most today was them
(William and Mary) sitting back and looking to counterattack us,"
commented American Head Coach Todd West
following the match. "I think the biggest thing for us is keeping a
positive mentality. We think we have a very talented team...we just
have to keep working, and good things will follow."
The Eagles will return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 23rd
when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., to take on the Virginia Tech
Hokies. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
