#4 Kyle Borshoff and Jasen Borshoff Go 3-0 at ACC Challenge; #16 Eagles Drop Three Duals

The #16 American University wrestling team opened its 2009-10 season on Sunday at the ACC Challenge in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Eagles went 0-3 on the day, falling to Virginia Tech, North Carolina and #20 Virginia, despite strong showings by several individuals. #4 Kyle Borshoff and Jasen Borshoff each went 3-0 while Steve Fittery and Mingo Grant went 2-1.

American dropped its first dual to Virginia Tech, 21-13, despite holding a 10-7 lead after the first five weight classes. J. Borshoff led of the day with a 4-2 decision at 125 lbs. and was followed up by a 6-3 decision earned by K. Borshoff at 149 lbs. Fittery gave the Eagles their 10-7 advantage with a 15-6 major decision at 157 lbs. before losses at 165 lbs. and 174 lbs. put American in a 14-10 hole. #4 Mike Cannon brought the score to 14-13 with a 7-2 decision at 184 lbs. but American would get no closer in the team race as Virginia won at both 197 lbs. and heavyweight to earn the 21-13 victory.

American fell to North Carolina, 26-9, as J. Borshoff, K. Borshoff and Grant were the only Eagles to earn victories against the Tar Heels.

The Eagles best showing of the day came against their best competition in #20 Virginia. American opened the dual with victories in the first five weight classes, including a Fittery major decision which gave the Eagles a 16-0 advantage. The Cavaliers rebounded with a major decision of their own at 165 lbs. and a fall at 174 lbs. to cut their deficit to 16-10. A forfeit at 184 lbs. evened the score at 16 before a major decision at 197 lbs. put Virginia over the top, 20-16. Grant earned a 6-4 decision at heavyweight to close out the day, but it was not enough to match Virginia in the team scores, as the Cavaliers took the win, 20-19.

K. Borshoff earned three decisions to go 3-0 on the day, including a 6-3 decision over #15 Pete Yates of Virginia Tech. J. Borshoff likewise went a perfect 3-0 with three decisions, two of which came by a single point. Fittery went 2-1 with major decisions over #15 Jeff Dong of Virginia Tech and Don Gonsor of UVA while Grant went 2-1 with two decisions.

American will return to the mats next Sunday, November 22, at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Pa. The Eagles finished third at last season's Keystone Classic while crowning two champions and placing seven wrestlers on the podium.

K. Borshoff will not will travel with the team for the Keystone Classic but will instead be competing in the 44th annual NWCA All-Star Classic in Fullerton, Calif., on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. ET. K. Borshoff is the first American wrestler to be selected to compete in the event, which annually pits two of the top wrestlers in each weight class against one another. The All-Star Classic will be streamed live via LiveSportsVideo.com for a price of $9.99. To sign up, click here.
