Box Score Junior Daniel
Shannon scored two goals to lead a potent offensive
attack as the American University men's soccer team defeated Army,
4-0, at Reeves Field on Sunday afternoon. American controlled the
tempo and style of play for nearly the entire match as the Eagles
posted a season-high 26 shots, with nine on goal, to the Black
Knight's two.
Army (1-9, 0-2) earned its best scoring opportunity of the day
less than one minute into the action as Michael Chere sent a header
on goal following a corner kick. American's (5-3-1, 2-0) Matt
Makowski was in perfect position to make the save
though and sent the ball up and over the goal for his only save of
the match. Following Army's ensuing corner, American took over and
controlled possession for the majority of the half.
American pressured the Black Knight's defense on several occasions
over the first 18-plus minutes of play but failed to put a goal
past Army goalkeeper Nick Alexander. Jack
Scott made a run at the goal in the 20th
minute after receiving a pass from Mike
Worden on the right side of the box and took it in on
the baseline to the right post. Alexander charged out to make the
save on Scott's shot, but the play proved to be a preview of what
would come in the second half for the Eagles.
American continued to push the ball upfield as the half wore on
and in the 31st minute nearly came through with its
first goal off a Worden corner kick. Ryan
Morales received the pass and played a header towards
the net but was just high with his attempt. Later, Worden took a
shot from point blank but his try was saved by Alexander to
preserve a 0-0 tie heading into the half.
The Eagles started quickly coming out of the break and just missed
with a Worden shot, which hit the post in the 47th
minute. Shannon put American on the board soon after, however, with
his third goal of the season in the 51st minute.
Nick
Kapus played the ball through the Army defense to
Shannon in the center of the field where he beat two more defenders
to make a run at the goal. Alexander charged out, but Shannon was
able to beat him to the far post, giving American a 1-0
advantage.
The flood gates opened for the Eagles in the final six-plus
minutes as their continued pressure finally wore down Army's
defense. Shannon scored his second goal of the game, and fourth of
the season, in the 84th minute. The score was nearly
identical to his first as Kapus sent a pass through two
defenders to Shannon, who had an open run at the goal. With
Alexander again charging at him, Shannon calmly played the ball
over top of the goalkeeper before tapping it in for a 2-0 lead.
Scott made it a three-goal game three minutes later when he had
a one-on-none look at the goal and made the most of it for his
first score of the season. Jamie
Davin was credited with the assist as he found Scott
streaking in behind the Army defense, which had stopped on the play
in an attempt to draw an offside call. The tactic was unsuccessful,
as the officials let the play continue, resulting in a Scott shot
from the left side of the box to the far post.
Moments later, Davin gave American the final 4-0 margin, scoring
on a ball from left side of the box to the far post on a difficult
angle. David
Menzie earned the assist on the play.
American outshot Army by a final total of 26-2 with nine shots
going on goal, and held a distinct 13-3 advantage in penalty
corners. Worden led the team with five shots on the day while six
others tallied three shots each. Makowski made one save in 90
minutes of action.
"We said we would get some opportunities, and once we got one,
we though we might be able to get two or three, and fortunately it
turned out to be four," remarked American Head Coach Todd
West in his live postgame interview on Eagles Vision
TV. "But I was just happy the guys stayed with it and didn't get
frustrated."
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, October 10, when
they host Lafayette at 1 p.m. at Reeves Field. The match can be
