WASHINGTON - Michelle Kirk
scored a career-high 16 points to pace the American University
women's basketball team to a 69-37 Patriot League win over Navy at
Bender Arena on Wednesday. The victory extends the Eagles' winning
streak to nine games and guarantees at least a share of the regular
season conference championship.
American (16-12, 10-3 PL) was in control from the opening tip,
as the Eagles jumped out to a 9-0 lead when Talicia Jackson
hit a three-point basket at the 17:01 mark. Navy scored the next
two baskets to cut the lead to 9-4, but the Eagles would begin to

Hayes scored five consecutive points, including a trey to
extend the lead to 14-4. American would build its advantage to 16
points with just under two minutes remaining in the half when Stephanie
N'Garsanet scored her tenth points of the half on a basket in
the paint. The Eagles finished the first half with a commanding
31-15 lead.
AU opened the second half with a 7-2 run led by Kirk's five
consecutive points to lead 38-17. Kirk went on to hit back-to-back
threes with 12:10 left in the game to give the Eagles' a 47-23
margin and American would go on to lead by as many as 34 late in
the second half as they held Navy to just 23.6 percent shooting
from the floor, including 0-15 from behind the arc.
Kirk finished with 16 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Hayes
scored 11 points and added seven rebounds and remains 10
three-point baskets shy of the career record. N'Garsanet rounded
out the double-digit scorers for the Eagles, recording her
first-ever double-double, tallying 15 points and 11 rebounds. Maggie
Smith-Davidson grabbed 10 boards, four steals and three assists
in the win.
Navy (6-22, 2-11 PL) was led by Cassie Consedine, who scored 12
points and picked up seven rebounds. K.C. Gordon scored nine points
for the Midshipmen.
American celebrated its three graduating seniors prior to the
start of the game, as Hayes, N'Garsanet and Smith-Davidson all
played their final regular season game at Bender Arena. The Eagles
will conclude their regular season on Saturday at 12 noon at
Lafayette. The game can be seen on RCN-TV local channel 8 in the DC
