WEST POINT, N.Y. - The American University
women's basketball team shot 17-20 from the free throw line in the
second half to seal a 63-51 Patriot League win over Army at Christl
Arena Saturday. The win marks the seventh straight for the Eagles
and sixth in a row on the road, as AU will continue to at least
share a part of the conference lead pending the outcome of games
involving Lehigh and Holy Cross.
Army (16-10, 7-4 PL) closed within two points, 36-34, early in
the second half, but Stephanie
N'Garsanet and Talicia Jackson
combined for hit 7-8 from the charity stripe to go up 41-34. The
Black Knights would score the next five points, down 41-39 with
just under 12 minute mark.
American (14-12, 8-3 PL) held a 52-45 lead when Nalini Hawkins
drained her third three-point basket of the second half to cut the
deficit to four. The Eagles responded with a Liz Leer hoop to go up
54-48 with 3:13 to play. AU would continue to extend its lead from
the free throw line and extended its lead to 57-49 with 2:48 on the
clock when Liz
Hayes sunk her second three of the game. The Eagles would score
their final six points from the line to claim the 63-51 win.
With both sides playing stingy defense, the score was knotted up
at 10 apiece with 11:53 remaining in the half. American went on an
8-0 run, sparked by a Maggie
Smith-Davidson basket in the paint to open up an 18-10 lead.
Army cut the lead to four on a pair of Megan Ennenga free throws,
but AU's Jackson responded with her first trey of the contest to
extend the margin to seven points, 21-14. Army trailed 32-25 with
20 seconds remaining when Cara Enright hit a lay-in to send the
teams into the locker room with the Eagles up 32-27.
Jackson led American with 14 points, three assists and two
steals. Leer came off the bench to score 12 points and added a
team-high nine rebounds and a block. Smith-Davidson finished with
eight points and eight boards.
Army's Hawkins led all scorers with 16 points. Enright tallied
11 points and five rebounds. Courtney Wright had a team-high nine
boards off the bench for the Black Knights.
American University will look to extend its winning streak to
eight games on Saturday, when they host Holy Cross at Bender Arena.
Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. as the Eagles will play in their "Think
Pink" game to support breast cancer, all fans are asked to support
in the cause and wear pink.
