WASHINGTON - The American University volleyball
team showed tremendous perseverance and toughness Saturday night,
but it was not enough, as their comeback effort fell short, losing
to North Carolina, 3-2.
Rubena
Sukaj (Tirana, Albania/Asim Vokshi) set a new career high with
31 kills in the match. The junior outside hitter also recorded 12
digs, earning her second double-double of the year and was named to
the UNC Classic All-Tournament Team. Ivana Cebakova
(Brno, Czech Republich/Ludvika Danka) also recorded a career high
in kills, tallying 16. Christina Nash
(Princeton, Fla./Coral Reef) assisted on 58 Eagle attacks and Chelsa Brooks
(Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) blocked seven Tar Heel attempts.
After falling behind 2-0, the Eagles showed no quit. Down 18-16
in the third game, AU stormed back and held game point at 29-24. A
win-by-two situation was eventually needed to take the frame and
the Eagles came out victorious, 35-33. Game four was won solidly by
AU, as it jumped out to an early 6-1 advantage and would lead by as
many as seven late in the game. In the match's final game, the
Eagles were tied with UNC at six before the Tar Heels would break
away and earn match point at 15-12.
The Eagles return to action Sept. 14-15, as the host of the
American Volleyball Tournament. Eight teams will compete in the
two-day event, with four schools from both the Patriot League and
Ivy League represented. Play will begin at 11 a.m. Friday and
concludes at 7 p.m. Saturday. The tournament champion will be
crowned after a 4:30 p.m. match Saturday, between the top seeded
Patriot League team and the top seeded Ivy League team.
