Volleyball Blocks its Way to Sweep of Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The American University volleyball team posted a season-high 14 total blocks on the way to a 3-0 sweep of Army. The dominant performance up front was led by Prinzez Zeck, who totaled nine denials on the match. The Eagles are now 11-1 in Patriot League play, and can gain sole possession of the number one seed with a win against Colgate on Saturday in Hamilton.

Notable
  • Sciborski followed Zeck with six total blocks of her own, and Sterling had four. The sophomore middle blocker also had seven kills, hitting .500 on the night.
  • Salme Adeele Hollas led the attacking effort for the Eagles, putting down 10 kills and hitting .348.
  • Deniz Dakak dished out 29 assists, and nearly recorded a double-double with eight digs.
  • On the defensive side, Bella Marrero had an excellent game helping AU control the ball. She took on 22 digs and committed zero reception errors. The Eagles had just one reception error as a team.
  • Sophie Dufour added eight digs, and Alex Ioannou got her body to six.
  • From the service area, Dakak highlighted AU's six aces with three to her name.
How it Happened
  • AU grabbed control of the match early and never let it go, powering through the first set handily.
  • Leading 9-5, the Eagles went on an 11-4 run to make the score 19-9, nearly keep Army in single-digits by the time they reached 20 points.
  • The Black Knights responded with an 11-5 run to narrow the deficit, but American stayed composed and took the set 25-19. Hollas had four kills in the frame, and Dufour followed with three.
  • The second set was a routing, with AU winning it 25-7. It was the team's largest margin of victory of the season, headlined by eight team blocks accumulated from Zeck, Sciborski, Dufour, Sterling, and Hollas. Sciborski also led the attacking end way with four kills.
  • Army challenged AU the most in the third set, knotting the score at 15-15 at one point. A determined response from the Eagles erased that challenge, as a 10-5 run closed out the set and the match.
  • Seven of the ten final points came on four kills and three blocks from American, with Sciborski and Zeck putting a bow on the victory with a denial on the final point.
Up Next
  • The Eagles will stay in the state of New York tomorrow, travelling to Hamilton to face Colgate. With a win, AU can grab sole possession of first place in the Patriot League.
