WASHINGTON - The American University women's
basketball team's three-game winning streak came to an end Thursday
night, as the Eagles dropped an 80-65 decision to Morgan State. Liz Leer had a
career night for AU but the freshman's efforts were not enough to
slow the Lady Bears in the second half.
American (5-4) counteracted an 8-0 run by MSU (4-2) to open the
game with a 15-2 run or their own. Leer powered the run with eight
of her team-high 11 first-half points. For the third game in a row,
AU shot 50 percent or better (50.0 %) from the field in the first
half and took an eight point lead into the break.
MSU chipped away at the Eagles lead in the second half and took
the lead at the midway point, 57-55. The Lady Bears extended that
lead to 11 points, 66-55, to cap off an 18-0 run. American was not
able to overcome the deficit.
Liz Hayes
scored a game-high 19 points in the losing effort with 15 coming
from behind the arc, dished out four assists and tallied four
rebounds. Leer recorded a new career-high with 18 points on eight
of nine shooting, breaking her previous mark of 10. Leer also tied
a career-high with a team-leading seven rebounds and set a new mark
with three assists. Michelle Kirk
scored seven points, all in the first half, setting a new
career-high as well. American's three-game winning streak and
three-game home win streak each came to an end Thursday.
Four Lady Bears scored in double-figures led by Corin Adams who
scored 16. Brittany Dodson, Theresa Davis and Britney Griffin each
scored 10.
