WASHINGTON - The American University women's
basketball team (4-3) defeated Western Michigan Saturday (2-4)
night, 65-61, powered by Sahar Nusseibeh's
season-high 18 points and eight rebounds.
Normally a hot-shooting team from behind the arc, AU's first
attempt for three came with just 3:33 remaining in the first half
when Talicia
Jackson sank a trey to tie the game, 34-34. The Eagles hit
51.7% of their shots in the first half led by Nusseibeh who score
11 points on five of eight shooting but trailed, 41-37, going into
half.
American gained its first lead since the mid-way point of the
first period on a Nusseibeh layup from Liz Hayes, 50-49, at
the 11:52 mark and extended that lead to four on its next
possession as Nusseibeh sank her second-consecutive layup and the
and-one. Western Michigan remained close until the final buzzer,
matching the Eagles on the scoreboard four times in the game's
final 10 minutes. AU remained steadfast though and iced the game on
a Hayes free throw with just 10 seconds remaining.
Nusseibeh was complemented on the offensive end by Stephanie
N'Garsanet who scored 12 points, Jackson who scored nine and
Hayes and Pam
Stanfield who each scored six. Maggie
Smith-Davidson led AU with nine rebounds and both Hayes and
Smith-Davidison notched a team-high five assists.
Western Michigan was led by Tiera DeLaHoussaye's 12 points and
five assists and Amanda Parker's 10 points and seven rebounds.
