WASHINGTON - The hot outside shooting of the
American University women's basketball team continued Saturday
afternoon as the Eagles rode six three-point field goals to a 57-46
win over Brown in the consolation game of the University of Rhode
Island Tournament. Liz Hayes and Talicia Jackson
each scored in double-digits for AU and the Eagles out-rebounded
the Bears 54-34.
American (3-3) finished the game shooting 46.2 percent (6-13)
from downtown including three of six shooting from Jackson. Maggie
Smith-Davidson grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds to lead the
Eagles charge on the boards and was complimented by Stephanie
N'Garsanet and Pam Stanfield who
each grabbed nine rebounds of their own.
Brown's (0-6) only lead came on a Annesley O'Neal jumper for the
game's first points. Two possessions later, Hayes found Jackson for
an open three to take a 3-2 lead which AU would never relinquish.
Brown remained within striking distance for the entire first half
never trailing by more than eight, a margin which American took
into the locker room at half, 30-22.
The second half was all AU as the Eagles opened on a 14-2 run.
It began when Smith-Davidson snagged an offensive rebound off a
missed free throw and Hayes nailed the ensuing jumper. 1:44 later
Jackson scored five consecutive points for American, connecting
from outside and finishing a fast break started by an N'Garsanet
block to force Brown to call timeout with 15:03 left in the half
down 40-24. American's largest lead in the game, 48-28, came with
6:53 remaining with Stanfield at the line. AU finished the game on
the wrong end of an 18-9 run but still won comfortably, 57-46.
American was led by Jackson who scored 13 points on five of 10
shooting, assisted on three scores and picked the pocket of two
Bears. Hayes scored in double-figures for the fourth game in a row
with 12 points and dished out a team-high six assists. As a team,
AU only shot 35.2 percent (19-54) but grabbed a season-high 54
rebounds including 18 on the offensive glass.
O'Neal was the high scorer for Brown and finished the game with
nine points. Sadiea Williams totaled eight points in the loss and
had a team-high eight rebounds. The Bears were held to 15 of 56
shooting (26.8%) for the game and shot just 17.1 percent in the
second half (6-35).
American will return to action Saturday, Dec. 1, as it returns
home to Bender Arena to host Western Michigan at 7 p.m.
