AU Wrestling Falls to 0-3 at Northeast Duals

Nov. 24, 2007

TROY, N.Y. - The American University wrestling team fell to 0-3 at the Northeast Duals after losing to No. 3 Oklahoma State, 42-0. In the first round of the duals AU lost to No. 25 Bloomsburg, 36-9, and in the second round was defeated by No. 9 Central Michigan, 43-3.

Against the Cowboys, Freshman Matt Mariacher was matched up with the nation's No. 1 wrestler at 133 lbs., Coleman Scott, and lost his last match of the day, 6-0. Scott took Mariacher down 1:07 into the first period and accumulated more than one minute worth of riding time before the period ended. Down just 2-0, Mariacher began the second period on top. Scott escaped from Mariacher's hold a little over one minute into the frame and took him down for a 5-0 lead. Scott scored one more point in the third period for a 6-0 win.

Kyle Borshoff wrestled national No. 2 Nathan Morgan to a 9-4 decision in the next match at 141 lbs. A quick takedown by Morgan put Borshoff in an early hole but he quickly escaped to move the score to 2-1. Borshoff could not keep pace though as Morgan scored another takedown in the first, escaped from his down starting position in the second and took Borshoff down once again to build a 7-2 lead heading into the third period where the match would end at 9-4.

No. 8 Mike Cannon dropped his first decision of the year, 11-7, to Jake Dieffenbach. Cannon quickly fell behind 4-2 after round one and was down 7-3 heading into the third after a Dieffenbach escape and takedown. Cannon was unable to mount a significant offensive attack in the third and his comeback effort fell short.

In its second dual of the day, American fell in a lopsided affair to No. 9 Central Michigan, 43-3.

Mariacher lost a close decision to Conor Beebe, 5-2. Mariacher began the third period in the down position trailing 5-1 and quickly earned one point for an escape. With under a minute to go Mariacher shot twice on Beebe but both attempts proved unsuccessful as the clock ran out on the freshman.

Borshoff lost what some might call a heartbreaker, 5-3, to Eric Kruger in the 141 lbs. weight class. Down 3-1, Borshoff scored a reversal in the waning moments of the first period to take a 3-2 lead. Kruger escaped Borshoff early in round two and the two wrestlers went into the final period tied at three. Kruger rode Borshoff for much of round three and as Borshoff struggled to escape with time winding down Kruger rolled him to his back and scored a nearfall with just 10 seconds remaining to earn the decision.

Cannon earned American's only individual victory in the loss, 6-2 over No. 18 Trevor Stewart. Cannon, a 165 pounder, scored a takedown just 18 seconds into the match but Stewart scored a reversal five seconds later to even the bout. An escape by Cannon and ensuing takedown allowed him to regain the lead, 5-2, and he closed out the period racking up riding time. Cannon began round three down and escaped the hold of Stewart to gain the final score of 6-2.

American lost its first dual to No. 25 Bloomsburg, 36-9, despite enjoying a 6-4 lead after three weight classes.

Mariacher earned American's first points when he took a 3-1 decision over Jason Guffey. After finishing the first period in a 0-0 tie, Mariacher got on the offensive and scored what proved to be the winning takedown early in the second.

Borshoff followed Mariacher's win with a victory of his own, 9-6 over George Hickman. Borshoff controlled his opponent for much of the match and earned an extra point for riding time.

American lost its next two matches by bonus points to forfeit the lead.

Cannon earned a 13-6 decision in his match over Rob Hoffman. Cannon allowed Hoffman several escape points as he attempted to increase his lead with takedowns to earn bonus points and bring the team scores closer.

Bloomsburg won the final four matches of the dual. Two Huskies earned falls in those matches and the heavyweight class was forfeited.

The Eagles will return to the mat this Wednesday, Nov. 28, when they travel north to Johnstown, Pa., to face Pittsburgh-Johnstown at 7 p.m.
