AU Women's Basketball Dropped by Local Rival Georgetown University, 67-52

WASHINGTON - American University women's basketball was defeated by local rival Georgetown University, 67-52, on Friday night in McDonough Arena. AU falls to 1-2 on the season, while the Hoyas improve to 2-1.

Georgetown went into the half leading by three points and was able to extend its lead to as great as 18 with just over seven minutes remaining on the clock. AU went on an 11-2 run over the next five minutes, with freshmen Michelle Kirk and Liz Leer combining for nine of those 11 points, to cut the Hoyas' lead to nine with 2:46 left in the game.

Georgetown guard Brina Pollack ended the hosts' drought with a jumper and American University was forced to foul as the minutes dwindled down. The Hoyas netted six of seven free throws in the final two minutes to secure their lead and walk away with the win. GU shot 70 percent from the charity stripe for the contest.

AU came out strong early, taking a five-point lead in the first three minutes. American last led with 14:18 left in the first, with Sahar Nusseibeh netting a jumper to give the Eagles a 12-11 advantage.

Stephanie N'Garsanet led the visitors with 15 points, with Liz Hayes chipping in 13 of her own, including a game-high three buckets from downtown. Pam Stanfield registered five assists in the loss and led all players with three steals.

GU has now won seven straight matches over American and 13 of 15 dating back to 1988.

American University returns to action on Monday night when it plays host to Wagner University at 7 p.m. In the last meeting between the two foes, AU came out with the 73-56 win.
