WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -
American University's Thomas Myers (Miami, Fla. / Gulliver Prep) held William & Mary to just one goal on nine shots, but it was not enough as the Eagles lost to the Tribe by a goal, 1-0. The Eagles are now 4-4-1 on the season.
"Overall, I think we were the more dangerous team today, but that doesn't matter since we did not get the win," said American head coach Todd West. "Other than the result, I am very proud of the performance of our guys today."
Myers was tested early when William & Mary's Pat Scherder got open near the goal and fired a pair of shots. The first came at 6:58 and Myers made a strong save to keep the game scoreless.
Offensively, the Eagles were credited with just three first half shots but two of those came in the last minute of the half. Sophomore Nigel White (Kensington, Md. / Bethesda-Chevy Chase) sent a cross over the box to junior Freddy Llerena (Germantown, Md. / Northwest). Llerena controlled the pass and made a quick move towards the goal. He got off a solid shot, but it was just a bit high. Less than 20 seconds later junior Gordon Templeman (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) fired a shot from 20 yards out but the Tribe's Kris Rake made a spectacular save with four seconds left in the half.
The next strong opportunity for AU came at 53:20. Senior David Marut (Winchester, Va. / John Handley) got off a low shot that Rake bobbled, but before Marut could pounce on the rebound Rake was able to fall on it.
The scoreless deadlock was broken at 68:00 when Bryan Hinkle of William & Mary took a free kick from 25 yards out. He found Brendan McCurdy, who was able to slip it past Myers from 10 yards out for the only goal of the game.
Myers made a great save on a shot by Scherder several minutes later to keep the game at 1-0.
American had a pair of opportunities late in the game. First sophomore Sal Caccavale (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) was able to get free and took a shot at 73:01 but Rake was able to make the stop. At 81:47 senior Shawn Kuykendall (Fairfax, Va./ Madison) found fellow senior Sean Albright (Philadelphia, Pa. / William Penn) on a breakaway, however, the Tribe quickly recovered defensively, and forced Albright's shot wide of the net.
William & Mary held a three-shot edge in shots (9-6) but the Eagles had the upper hand in corner kicks by five (7-2). American had 14 fouls compared to 13 for William & Mary. Myers finished with three saves.
American will open the Patriot League portion when of its schedule when they host Navy on Wednesday, September 29 at 3 p.m.
