COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- In the first match of the Maryland/adidas Classic, the American University men's soccer team dropped its first match of the season to Virginia, 1-0. The Eagles were outshot by Virginia, 10-9, but earned seven corner kicks compared to only one for UVa.
American (1-1-1) had an early chance in the match in the fifth minute as Charlie Koniver sent the ball ahead to Andrew Herman, but it went just past his run. The Cavs (1-2-0) were able to get on the board first as Kirk Dinnall sent the ball ahead to Adam Cristman who blasted the ball into the far left corner, giving Virginia a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles kept the pressure up as they searched for the equalizer and had one of their best chances of the game in the 23rd minute as Salvatore Caccavale passed the ball to Peter Philipakos who made a one-touch pass to Herman. However, Virginia goalkeeper Ryan Best made a diving save of Herman's shot. Herman had another shot in the 32nd minute as Caccavale fed him inside the box, but the shot was wide. AU fought off another Virginia chance in the 45th minute as the Cavs took a free kick, but AU keeper Thomas Myers came off his mark to make the save.
Early in the second half, AU had one of its better opportunities of the match. Beginning in the 49th minute the Eagles had four corner kicks in just over a minute, but were unable to convert. American's next chance came in the 62nd minute as Shawn Kuykendall took a free kick from the far left wing, but Best came off his mark to punch the ball away.
Two minutes later, Caccavale found space and passed the ball to David Marut who crossed the ball through the box, but no one was there. The 70th minute brought another opportunity for the Eagles as Caccavale found Philipakos who quickly passed the ball to Herman. Herman centered the ball, but it was cleared by UVa's John Hartman.
The Eagles had a difficult time getting the ball into the forwards all match as Hartman and Matt Oliver did a solid job keeping AU from attacking. American did have a number of opportunities in the match, but was simply unable to convert.
"I'm not pleased by the result, but I am pleased by the effort," coach Todd West said after the match.
American returns to action on Sunday to face No. 2 Maryland at 2:30 p.m. in College Park.
