WASHINGTON -- American University dominated everywhere but on the scoreboard, as they outshot Cornell 23-9. However, a penalty shot awarded to Cornell proved to be the difference, as the Big Red defeated American by the final score of 1-0.
The sequence for the winning goal began when an Eagle was whistled for a foul, and Cornell was awarded a penalty kick from 15 yards out. AU goalie Thomas Myers (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) did an outstanding job keeping the first shot out, but Scott Palguta followed his shot and knocked in the rebound at 52:23. The Big Red scored the goal shorthanded, after Tom Marks had collected his second yellow at 45:32.
The game was very physical, and a total of 26 fouls were called along with seven yellow cards. Overall, American had 15 fouls and two yellows. Unfortunately, both AU yellows were on Andrew Herman (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside), and he had to leave the game with 18:12 left to play. Cornell finished with 11 fouls and a staggering five yellow.
Salvatore Caccavale (West Islip, N.Y.) took six shots in the game, with three of them directly on goal. Sophomore Freddy Llerena (Germantown, Md./Northwest) entered the game in the second half, and seemed to spark the offense a bit. He narrowly scored one goal himself, and moved the ball well in Cornell's end of play. Senior midfielder Shawn Kuykendall (Fairfax, Va./Madison) came close as well, taking three shots, and nearly connecting on two of them.
Defensively the Eagles were led by Myers, who picked up five saves and played extremely well in net. However, Charlie Koniver (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), Nick Zaron (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and Sean Albright (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) all played sound defense in front of him.
For the Big Red, goalie David Mahoney notched 11 saves on 23 shots.
American will next play at Navy on Tuesday, September 30 at 4 p.m.
