STORRS, Conn. - In a game that appeared to be heading towards a scoreless draw, American University's Andrew Herman scored with 1:34 remaining in the second overtime to send the No. 21 Eagles over No. 9 Boston College. AU moves to 3-1 on the season, while B.C. falls to 2-1. Herman and defender David Pryor were named to the UConn/adidas Classic All-Tournament Team.
Boston College had an early chance as Oktay Kilic broke free, but AU's Sean Albright was able to stop him. B.C. also had three early corner kicks, but the Eagles were able to fight them off. American goalkeeper Thomas Myers made two nice saves early to turn away Boston College shots.
American started to put some pressure on as Peter Philipakos stole the ball from the B.C. defender and was able to earn AU's first corner of the match. However, Boston College was able to fight of the Eagle attack. American had another good chance as Kris Kuykendall sent the ball ahead to Herman, but his shot went just wide.
An American foul gave B.C. a free kick from just outside the box, but the kick went into the wall and the Eagles went on the counterattack. Philipakos sent the ball ahead to Herman who carried the ball down the field. Herman passed the ball to Michael Grinsfelder in the box, but B.C. was able to turn the attack away.
AU had another oppourtinity in the 43rd and 44th minutes as the squad put some pressure on the B.C. defense. However, the Eagles were not able to get a shot off and the teams went to halftime scoreless.
In the 48th minute, Boston College had one of its best chances of the game as Adam Pfeifer crossed the ball to Casey Schmidt, but his shot went high. In the 51st minute, Boston College's Bobby Thompson fired a shot on net, but Myers was able to make the save. Charlie Koniver made two strong plays for American early in the second half to stop B.C.'s attack.
American had an incredible chance in the 60th minute as Herman broke in alone and lofted a shot towards the net. Boston College goalkeeper Kyle Singer tipped the ball and it headed in towards an empty net. However, a B.C. defender was able to clear the ball out of danger.
In the 67th minute, AU had another opportunity as Shawn Kuykendall sent a corner kick into the box. Kris Bertsch sent the ball in on net, but it was blocked by a Boston College defender. In the 76th minute, Albright sent a long ball to Herman that was fired on goal, but saved by the B.C. keeper.
Schmidt broke free for B.C. in the 80th minute, but was fouled by AU's Larry McDonald just outside the box. On the ensuing free kick, Thompson shot on goal, but Myers made the save for American. Grinsfelder centered the ball in the 85th minute to Bertsch, but his one-touch went high over the goal.
American kept the pressure on B.C. as regulation wound down, but could not find the net as the match went to overtime.
Herman had the first chance of overtime shooting from just outside the box, but Singer made the save to his left. In the 94th minute, Kris Kuykendall centered the ball to Bertsch whose shot went just wide of the net. After most of the first overtime played in the midfield, Bertsch took a corner kick in the 99th minute that the B.C. keeper was just able to punch away. Koniver took a shot with 11 seconds remaining in the first overtime, but it sailed wide.
In the second overtime, Kris Kuykendall had an early shot from just outside the box that forced Singer to make a diving save. B.C. had its best chance of overtime as they had a free kick in the 104th minute. Kilic was able to get his head on the ball, but it went just over the goal.
American had another great chance just one minute later as Philipakos passed the ball to an open Grinsfelder, but the shot was saved yet again. In the 106th minute, Herman fired a curling shot from just outside the box, but Singer punched the ball over the net.
Finally, American was able to convert in the 109th minute as Kris Kuykendall passed the ball over to Andrew Herman who fired the ball past a diving Singer into the net to give American the victory. Herman has scored the game-winning goal in all three of AU's wins in 2002.
Myers finished the game with four saves for American while Singer made seven saves for B.C. AU outshot Boston College 8-3 in the two overtime periods and had 11 corner kicks to B.C.'s seven.
AU returns to action next weekend at the Nike Classic at Penn State. The Eagles face Ohio State on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and Penn State on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
