American Gains Important Patriot League Win Over Army, 6-0

WASHINGTON - American broke out of a season-long goal-scoring drought in an important 6-0 win over Army in men's soccer here at Reeves Field on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon. The six-goal outburst was the highest goal total of the season for the Eagles, and marked American's fifth shutout of the year.

American (6-6-1, 4-1-0) got on the board in the ninth minute when Jonathon Colton took a feed from Kris Kuykendall and put it in the upper right corner of the net. The Eagles rolled from there, outshooting the Black Knights, 21-4.

Eagle Defender Bobby Brennan added the second tally, and his first of the season, off a direct kick. Placed at the top of the 18-yard box, Kris Bertsch was used as a decoy, and then Brennan hit a beautiful ball that curled into the upper right corner, beating the outstanding effort of Army keeper Kevin Larrabee.

Andrew Herman, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week, closed the first-half scoring for American with just over a minute to play in the period. He took a long lead pass from Kuykendall into the box, split two Black Knight defenders, and slipped the ball past Larrabee.

The second half was much like the first and started quickly for American. Just 17 seconds into the half, Adam Rosen collected a flick from Melvin Espinal, and touched it into the lower right corner of the net for the Eagles' fourth tally.

Brett Colton added a goal on a assist from Rosen to push the margin to 5-0, and junior Michael Grinsfelder scored his first career goal off a feed from Shawn Kuykendall to close the scoring.

Larrabee made three saves for Army, while Michael Behonick and Thomas Myers combined to earn the shutout for the Eagles. Myers made one save.

American returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 28, when it hosts Penn State at 2:00 p.m.
